engine seals?ok i know of gaskets,a mechanic i talked to said he replaced the "engine seals",water pump, and timing belt.
the engine inquestion is a 3.0 v6 yota(pickup).

i am ignorant of the technical aspects of automobiles(aside from changing plugs, tires, oil etc.)among other things.

are these important procedures, will they add life to an engine? would replacement of said parts indicate serious prior damage?

There are tons of seals on a motor. Cam/balance shaft/crank to name a few. You should get them replaced now if he's doing a timing belt since the parts will be infinitely easier to get to.

im looking at purchasing this vehicle
1991 toyota 4x4 3.0v6.
new clutch, new water pump, new seals(he may have been more descriptive,i dont remember).
its in great shape and runs noticeabley better than my 4 runner.(240k)
its a local mechanic,not a car dealer...in a very small town i work in.
the yota in question has 120k on it.aside from some spot rust, its really very nice.
and the price is right.
i havent ruled out financing. but it seems getting exactly what i want is not as easy as it seems.dealers have been trying to push me into late model econoboxes(admittedly i did give them a ceiling)..but this i could buy outright and save money for better things.

The 3.0 is pretty bulletproof. I know my buddy at work has a '90 4Runner going on 220k plus. I think he's burning a little oil but otherwise the motor itself is good. How much is the vehicle in question?

asking 2500(negotiable)
thats with a new gas tank included as well.(as it needs one to pass inspection)
the interior is very well kept, this guy is just a very small service garage and gas station in an upscale small town.it isnt a "shady" garage. It wouldnt be in business+The guy seems pretty forcoming, he's no salesman but that isnt a bad thing.
The small rust spots are a very easy fix.and they are few.
i'll car fax it.

Sounds like a good deal to me.

Would you be concerned if I changed the transmission pan gasket on my truck? I would be happy if someone changed that gasket since I know that they changed fluid! Or what about changing valve cover gaskets? They do leak over time, so changing them just stops the slight oil leak that occurs.

As long as parts are installed correctly, I would rather have a vehicle that has had work done than one that hasn't.
