Car mounts

I have a Moto x4 and need a mount for my car to make it safer to see the map when traveling. Anyone have any recommendations for car mounts that don't attach to the windshield? Are the combination charger/mounts any good?

I don't know of it matters for mounts, but I have a '12 Ford Fusion.

Thanks!

Is there a custom mount for your car? Universal ones are always a bit crap.

I've got a Cravenspeed mount made for my mini with a choetech fast wireless charger mounted to it. I stuck a bunch of neodymium magnets inside the charger and a few thin ones under the leather skin on my phone. So the phone holds to the mount with the magnets and you need to plug it in to charge it.

The magnetic aspect of the mount is a hell of a lot easier than clamps or claws and it holds it pretty solidly (copes it me throwing a mini down winding rural lanes at speed).

KUDA makes great custom phone mounts for the exact make/model/year of car.

I had in my 2013 Ford C-Max when I owned one- very similar interior to the Fusion. Couldn't have been happier, as it looked like it was part of the vehicle. Super easy to install and take out without a trace of damage to the car. They're designed to hook under and snap in the interior contours of the exact vehicle model.

Yes, a bit spendy, but definitely the most sturdy and least 'just hanging off something not meant to be a mount' solution.

I did not know these custom mounts were a thing.

I would never spend that kind of money on one, but still neat.

I forgot, ProClip also makes model specific mounts:

https://www.proclipusa.com/vehicle/dashboard-mounts/848-ford-fusion/2012

A bit cheaper than KUDA, and more location options. But I it's just strictly a mount surface- the user has to do their own drilling and mounting phone-holding hardware into the blank platform. They sell phone-specific holders separately.

I personally don't mind spending a bit of money to do things right in my car. It's like my home away from home!
That said, neither KUDA or ProClip make a mount for the Chevy Volt where I'd want my phone. I can see why, the interior of the Volt is just not very mount-friendly.

Its just as well because now I interface with my phone + car function via the car's own touch screen, and Android Auto (or CarPlay). That seems to be where things are headed, and it is a nicer solution.

I still have my phone up on a vent-mount though.

I've never seen a cars touch screen be anywhere near the quality of a phone screen, they also always seem to perform horribly.
A well mounted phone using android auto beats the crap out of any poorly placed low quality car touchscreen.

Yeah, that's why I don't care that much about custom holders. Cars are just boxes that get me from A to B. My threshold is just not as high when it comes to cars.

The touch screen in my Volt is great.

I'm befuddled why you'd insist Android Auto is better on a phone screen than on a nice large touchsceen such as in the Volt? It's the exact same user experience just the car's screen is much bigger and no matter what kind of phone mount in existence, easier to reach. That it works with the car's built in voice and wheel controls is just that much better.

Serious question: do they not have modern cars where you live?

I bet its not as good as, say, an S8+.

I guarantee that is neither easier to see or easier to reach than the mount in my mini.
The phone is held just in front and above the steering wheel so I can actually reach it without removing either hand from the wheel and its always in view just above the steering wheel but not blocking the view of road.

So does my phone, that's just how Bluetooth works.

Thats not a serious question.

It amazes me how some people like you can get off on an impossible to really defend argumentative branch, just for the sake of argument. I think I recall 'arguing' with you just a few years ago how a phone like the s8 wasn't even possible! Now here you are with 'the future' in your hand.

OF COURSE the large 8" tablet-like screen in my car is much easier to see than *ANY* by compasison piddly size phone screen.

The point in a car is your eyes should be on the damn road and not fiddling with a phone screen. Its not even arguable a good modern touch screen in a vehicle is better than your tiny phone... its not there for you to obsess some nonsense minutia over the way people do with phones. You're DRIVING. its to deliver quick bits of information to you in the seconds of time you glance at it...

Of course a large modern dash screen does a better job of that than a small phone screen.

And sorry, NO it does not sound like you've set foot in a modern vehicle with a decent tablet sized touch screen.

But by all means, insist the opposite of easily observable reality. "Tiny screens are superior to large ones in a car!" Lol!

Jesus mate! Given that I have seen where the touch screen is mounted in the volt And I've seen where my phone is mounted and that you have only seen where the volt touchscreen is mounted I'm going to go with you being argumentative for the sake of it.

Your argument is all over the place. First its easier to see a big touchscreen regardless of where mounted, then its you shouldn't be looking at it anyway, then some bizarre thing about never having seen a modern car! Really?

Look at it this way. What's easier to see in a car, a touchscreen that you have to look down at or a heads up display in the windscreen? The size is less important than the placement by far.

Also good luck getting that dash touchscreen updated.

Man talk about being argumentative!

Yes, car manufacturers put dash screens in places that are difficult to see and use by drivers! Vs the billions in R&D you did hanging a phone off a vent or having it up obstructing the windshield! That makes total sense!

And you just proved my point you have no clue how things work with that sillyness about updates. Really? You didn't actually know how Android Auto or CarPlay work? Lol!
