I bought a 2006 Volkswagen Passat V6 a couple of months ago but it got destroyed in what was either a microbust or a tornado and most likely will be totaled....
The car was loaded with the sport package...had every single option except bluetooth....even had nav and xenon....

I figure I'll be getting about 15k-19k to spend on a replacement car and although I really liked the passat. Would prefer to spend less though...

I'm kinda thinking about something else....

Going to buy used or sure.

Maybe a G35 or something similar any ideas?

I need something with decent trunk space...because of the type of work I do and I really want something that has xenon lights because I really enjoy the great vision it gives you for night drving.

But I want something thats a good bang for the buck and fun to drive because I drive alot of miles in the city and out on the highway.

I'd actually also thought about possibilly getting a prius although that would probably be a pretty boring ride.

G35 Sedans are a bargain, you can often find them in the $12k-$14k range without too many miles, very solid drivetrain. The interior is sort of a mixed bag, but it's not that bad (or that great). They drive fantastic though. Acura TL can be found in that range as well, though FWD can be a bummer in some respects. Both will probably be more reliable than the VW, and considerably cheaper to maintain than an A4 or 3-series.

I really liked the interior of the VW...the seats looked great and were comfortable and everything else looked great....

The G35 interior puts me to sleep and is really the only thing that kinda makes me reluctant to get one.

I'm definitely going to miss roasting the tires in the passat....

Also, is it just me or do the used BMW's seem to just be insanely priced compared to similar cars in the same class?

Looks totalled. Roof is buckled, trunk lid is bad, right rear quarter damage and of course, some glass damage. But since the roof is messed up, they will likely total it.

I talked to the adjuster today on the phone and he seemed to think it wouldn't be totaled because it was so new but I think once he sees it he is going to change his mind....

With that kinda damage if they don't want to total it I'm getting a lawyer because I don't see how it could ever drive right or be safe after all the weight coming down on top of th car....no telling what else is screwed up not to mention it has at least minor damage on ever single piece of the car except maybe the drivers side rear door.
Plus glass all over the inside of the car probably messing up the leather and some water got into the car as well even though I covered it right after it happened....

I feel like I should probably be more upset about it than I am but in all honesty I'm just glad nobody got hurt after watching all of this happen all around me while I was in the house.....It just twisted that tree right off....not to mention the top of an electrical pole.

The Veedub was going to cause you reliability issues anyway, good to get out before it did. G35 has your name on it!

Considering the VW was a 280hp 3500lb FWD car, I think you'll be amazed at how well a lighter, RWD G35 drives in comparison.

So how much do you think the G35 weighs?

You will feel the FWD/RWD difference, but it's not really any lighter.

VW:
0-60 5.9s
14.3 sec @ 101 mph
3600 lb

Prev. Gen G35:
5.83 0-60
14.23 @ 99.4
3541 lb

Ah good catch, and ViperGTS as well. For some reason I remembered them weighing a bit less.

Performance looks relatively identical then, with the 260hp tune. Any idea how hard it is to convert that to one of the higher outputs of 280 or higher hp? I hear that an ecu flash does just that, but as to how $$$, I have no idea.

hmm kinda a dilemma, I can definitely replace with a lower mileage passat with more options...than a G35 would cost (the resale is higher on the g35)....I may just have to throw a bunch of types into the ring and see which one I can get the best deal on....
from 45mph to 100mph....the Passat was great. Awesome midrange acceleration.
I do worry about reliability though because with Volkswagens it's a huge case of hit or miss....

Any other types, I should throw into the ring to research?

Passats, and the V6's in particular are actually pretty decent when it comes to reliability. The Golfs/Jettas built in Mexico and the Turbo engines really bring VW's overall ratings down.

But the Passat is built in Germany and the V6 engines have far fewer problems than the 1.8T/2.0T.

Another car to look at for cheap is the the Saab 9-3 Aero.

I wonder if you can get another 06 B6 Passat as lease contracts end? I'm really happy with my 07 2.0T 6M, 46K miles with no complaints.

If you can get an '05 or newer G35, they come with the updated interior. I looked at the '04 G35 when my friend was car shopping and I thought "meh". When my turn to get a car came in '05, I was impressed with the newer interior.

If you can get a '05 G35 in stick, they come with 298HP so they should be a bit faster than the autos. I was extremely happy with my G35. It was the best car I have ever had and I had a few nice ones including: 95 BMW 325i, 97 Prelude SH, 99 Lexus GS300, Acura MDX amongst others. I have a BMW 335i right now but in only 3 months, I've had several problems with it. The G35 isn't as fast but all around I think it's better so far.

I just got a 05 G35 sedan for 18.6k 32k on the Odometer from a Infiniti Dealer. But if you buy from a Used car dealer you can have one for 16kish and then less privately. Awesome car so far :)

If you are going for a G35 get an 05 or newer, 05 was a refresh model which addressed alot of the issues in 03-04 its on wiki just search For "infiniti g35"

Edit: seems doggie got it :) if you do get a manual there is a TSB for Oil consumption issue you have to look out for other then that nothing else.

Check http://g35driver.com for more info

Good luck

It's too bad that happened so soon. Another year or two and you would be able to get a used VW CC in that price range.
