Car Making Funny Noises

What a wonderful Friday 13th so far....

I woke up this morning and got in my car and started noticing a strange noise, one that got more noticable as the engine revved higher. It was kind of like a whiney sound, like "woooooo" when I pressed the gas. Kind of hard to describe. Any ideas? Car is running fine.

i figured out the high pitch whine in my car at higher rpms is probably the balance shafts spinning at 2x rpm.

the exhaust goes WOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooo!!!!!! ?

realistically it could be an alternator or something belt-driven.

Power Steering pumps can whine like that. Does it change pitch when you have the motor running, car stationary and turn the wheel?

Could be just the serpentine belt slipping. If it's as humid there, as it is here, that could account for it coming on suddenly. You could spray a belt dressing on to see if that effects the noise. If it does, you'll have to adjust the tensioner.

My uncle checked it out and said the whine was coming from the alternator. We're going to go buy one and put it on tomorrow, any idea how much they cost, ballpark?

I was going to suggest that too. That our a bad belt.

I didn't know a bad alternator made that kind of noise.

The price will vary depending on the make and model of your car. Others have stated ranges though.

If you still own the 97 Chevy Lumina then you are looking at $100 -175 if you buy from Autozone or Advance Auto Parts.

Balance shafts shouldn't make any noise, well at least none that you could ever hear.
