Car makes strange noise when turning and occassionally when pressing brake?

It sounds like an axle is turning or something, kinda loud, rough noise. This usually occurs when I make sharp turns, but lately it occurs when I press down on the brake - this isn't consistent, however. Any ideas? I'm sure this is vague.

Possibly a CV joint binding up, gonna want to have it looked at before it gets really bad.

I had the same thing happen to me, except for the noise while braking. It was a snapped front stabilizer bar.

CV joint is most likely. Not too cheap or easy to replace, *but* for the record I managed to go over 40,000 miles on a bad CV joint in my old Celica, and it was still working fine when I sold it (I do not endorse this, always make sure your car is in perfect mechanical shape, etc).

Oh, fyi this is a '97 rwd volvo with 97k miles or so on it - the turning issue has been on and off for three years or so. The brake issue is something new.
