I'm not much of a car guy, so I don't know how to diagnose these problems.

Basically, when I turn the key in the ignition, sometimes I hear what sounds like sparks/electricity crackling. Anyone have any ideas if/what the problem may be?

It's a 2004 Honda Accord v4, with about 35k on it. Not sure if that information is of any use.

Thanks ahead of time

lol, unfortunately I'm an engineer so my first inclination is to find the problem.

If it's a rapid clicking type sound it could be the starter solenoid going bad.

...and wrong forum.

Electrical connection somewhere is flaky. Check the battery cables and the starter leads first. If those are OK and the problem persists, it could be that the ignition switch is starting to go out.

Do you smell anything that could be burning insulation? Sniff around the steering column and under the dash after you hear the noise. Also, stick your head under your dash and see if any connectors are visible. Try pushing those together and see if the noise goes away.

Also, V4 engines are VERY rare and never used in a Honda as far as I know. You can find a few in European Saabs and Fords from the mid-90's. I think I remember hearing about an older American car that used a V8 chopped in half.

You have a straight 4 cylinder engine.
