You know I've never understood car insurance.... one company will want a couple hundred every 6 months and the next will want 1600... I just don't understand it. Just as an example... I am 23 and own a 94 Firebird Formula. For the past few years I had State Farm and it was semi resonable. I just moved from IL to Texas. State Farm in IL was charging me $120 a month for $500 deductible. I move to texas and the SAME company now wants $190 a month for the same coverage or $160 for $1000 deductible. What the hell is that? An extra $70 a month because I moved? Allstate quotes me $1800 every 6 months!!!! Thank god I called Progressive, they only want $128 which is only $8 more then I was paying for State Farm in IL, BUT I go down to a $250 Deductible, gain towing, car rental, gap insurance, and I have better coverage (100k property vs 50k)... so why are insurance companies SOOOO different, even with the SAME company in a different state. Its so dumb.

Insurance rates are based on many factors, one of which is the incidence of accidents in the area where you live. Obviously, an insurance company will demand a higher premium from a driver in NYC, where accidents happen more often due to crowded roads, and auto theft is more common, then Lancaster, Pennsylvania, which is mostly flat, farmland, and has far fewer cars.

The areas are very similar... traffic is about the same, sure as hell no $70 difference.

If you live in Louisiana and have car insurance, you are most likely bleeding from the ass.

I have a 2000 Hyundai Tiburon - no tickets/1 Not-at-fault accident in Feb 2000.....and I pay $206/mth

Oh yeah...I'm 25 and live in Baton Rouge

Then you need to switch carriers. That wreck in 2003 is over 3 years old and most companies only go back 3 years.

ME: 25, MN Twin Cities, No accidents or tickets last 3 years, 91 Integra Hatchback RS

Progressive: $1150.00/6 month full coverage, $600.00/6 month liability
Geico: $450/6 month full coverage, $250/6 month liability

And the progressive quote was with a 5% discount because I work for the government. How they came up with that quote, I have no idea.

I've been looking. Every place is high. There was also a huge spike for my particular zip code. Insurance is so high here that State Farm no longer processes new claims.

*EDIT* I just went to the Geico website and got a quote for the same coverage as I have now and the quote was over $1900/6 months......geesh!!

I don't know how they come up with these figures. They say they have many factors, but c'mon.. a difference of more than $500 for the same customer seems a bit weird. I'll call state farm on Monday since my mom has them... maybe I can get a multiple car discount.

Thats just my point I was trying to make... it seems all but one company will rip any single person off.

I just got my insurance lowered by $500/yr.(11%) by joining a credit union and getting a group rate through AAA.

I'm going to see if I can get another discount by moving my house insurance over to AAA.

Costco has been recomended here for car ins., they provide insurance from AMEX.

Well of course because you moved. The insurance companies go by the numbers. Zip Code: Theft rate, accident rate, ect... It is also how the state does business or how they regulate some insurance companies with consumer laws.

Like the Twin Cities has a theft rate through the roof. Expect to pay more for full coverage.

Example: For full coverage on a fire bird , 24 year old single male living in NJ, expect your insurance to be over 3,000 a year.
