Car Insurance questions.

I'm getting my licence in a month, and a car. I will still be attending high school for a couple of months and I will only be using the car for pleasure driving.

I know insurance is going to be a b*tch, and I would like to know what the cheapest way to get insurance is. Will I be able to get my dad to insure the car and me as a second drive (a lot cheaper this way), or will I need to get insurance on my own? How much will it cost me?

What type of protection should I get? I don't really want to get one side because I will be buying a fairly decent car.

Thanks.

you can go the 2nd driver route, just dont get a ticket, because your insurance(and your dad's also) will skyrocket. Insurance companies are NOT dumb. They know people do this, so if he has 2 cars, both with him as the main driver, and you are the only one in his household, they will know you are the other driver. It would be better if he went with another insurance company than he uses currently because then they will not know he has 2 cars.

Is there any risk that the insurance won't cover me if they find out I'm the primary driver of the second car? (even with a different insurance company)

I would put your insurance under your dad's policy. If he has homeowners insurance and another car insured under the same company then he qualifies for a multi-car discount. If you get a ticket your insurance will go up on your dad's policy, but what you can do at that point is to put your policy by itself instead of with your father. That means your rate will go up but his won't. The points always stays with the driver. 🙂

Do know this - If you are under your parents insurance policy, and you get into a wreck and the other driver(or drivers family) decides to sue, they can go after your parents for all they are worth and bring them down with you.

If you are on your own policy, they can only go after you.

My parents decided to put me on my own policy and helped me pay the difference to relieve them of the legal burden. I was a very responsible driver, but an inexperienced one so I know where their concerns were.

My family had some friends that were pretty much financially devistated when their teenage son under their insurance policy wiped out a family of 4 in stupid wreckless accident. Surviving members of the other vehicles family sued the kids parents, even though they weren't the ones driving.

Something to think about.
