If my car is parked in a parking lot and someone hit it and left and I file a claim, will my rates go up? It was just a broken tail light and some small dents. About 2500 worth. I never filed a police report and the car has full coverage.

How long ago? There's usually a time limit...and yes, usually your premiums will go up if you report something like this.

$2500 is a lot of small dents...if you're talking about the normal parking lot dings...good luck getting your insurance to cover the damage.

$2500 does seem like a high estimate. Also, as far as the time limit thing goes, I don't believe they can really determine when it happened without any witnesses. You could say it happened last week.

And yes, your insurance will go up.

Someone hit and ran my car last year in a parking lot. I filed a claim and my insurance did not go up. I specifically asked the insurance company would it go up before I filed a claim and they said no. I'm with GEICO.

Need to check w/ your company...The plan I have w/ progressive has accident forgiveness- your plan may have something similar where they won't up the premium, but no way anyone here will know

Same experience here with GEICO, rates remained the same.

Parked car damage can be claimed on Comprehensive policy, Not Collision. I said it was vandalism they said they could not determine if a vandal did it or another vehicle. They accepted the vandalism theory.

Your rates shouldn't go up, you were not at fault. Not sure if it would be covered by collision or comprehensive, since it wasn't really an accident. Usually comp has a lower deductible.

My sister was just in an accident last week where a driver in a manual rolled back at a stop light on a hill and messed up her bumper. The guy got out, looked at the damage and quickly got back in the car and drove off. My sister has a witness and got a picture of the car but he had paper plates from CarMax. She also filed a police report from the location of the accident. Geico says her rates won't go up but I assume she's paying the deductible. The estimate was about $1300 and it's already fixed. Admittedly this is basically a perfect scenario of proving a hit and run.

I have geico as well. My rate went up after another six months for no reason. No accidents within that time frame and nothing new added to my policy. It depends on your area and how high risk it is.

If you file a claim that goes on your insurance "record " and it depends if they want to up your rates or not. They may not but another company could when you shop next time.

A lot of times when I get quotes they don't ask about the fault anymore they want to know how many claims there have been.
