When you got your car insurance did they ask you if the vehicle was modified?

If your vehicle is modified what did you tell them?

I'm asking because I will be getting a new policy soon and I'm curious as to how having certain modifications might affect my insurance rates and such.

I told them and they didn't care. I pay for additional coverage in case its stolen.

My car has an engine swap, full suspension, wheels, etc.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that they never asked if it was modified.

Couldn't have asked for a better person to answer. I wonder if my insurance company would feel the same. My car is a 1990 CRX worth jack sh1t to them, no matter what mods I have. Not sure it's worth telling them.

My concern is being denied coverage if I ever need to file a claim after they come to find out it actually is modified when I told them it wasn't.

In that case they may well deny coverage if the find the car is different from the stated model. From experience, be honest and it should only be a small (if any) increase in the premium.

Just opt for extra insurance. I got the additional electronics insurance that covers me up to $2000 on my explorer...just make sure you have receipts.

What ins. co. do you have?

I actually do want it but I need a newer car than what I have. One that isn't modified (yet) so I don't have to worry about stupid crap like this.

I have Mercury insurance. I just hate paying out my ass to cover a car I'll get maybe $2,000 no matter what happens. I just want to make sure other drivers will be covered in case they need medical attention or what not. I was previously on my parents policy and I'm certain they didn't know it was modified then. This sucks.

that's the thing, they cover mods based on a percentage of the value of the vehicle.

I took out my entire stereo system anyway. The car is only worth $2,000 something KBB so I won't get anything no matter how many thousands of dollars worth of mods I might have.

Yeah, that's a problem. I'm covered for all the mods if its stolen or something but if someone else hits me I'd probably get bluebook for the car and nothing for the mods.

I guess I'll have to suck it up and ask them what the deal is.

So, know anyone besides yourself who might be interested in the car? I've also got extra Accord/Prelude engine parts.

Get it professionally appraised and advise your insurance company of it and pay for the extra.

Otherwise, if it eventually gets wrapped around a pole, you'll probably just be given black book replacement.

that's not worth the effort

I just don't want them to deny coverage because they blame the modifications for contributing to an accident if one occurs.

I understand it will be my fault for not getting compensation for whatever parts I have that they don't know about. I'm just wondering if that is the only reason they ask (because they think I want them covered). Aside from that I don't see why it would be their business if my car is modified.

I got sick of my old import so I joined your friends with a new "import".

Gotcha. I've never heard of them denying collision coverage due to mods. Would be an interesting precident if it ever happens though.

Maybe if you swap out an air-bag equipped steering wheel for one that doesn't have one? Or maybe if you have a body kit that requires cutting up the bumper support? Just throwing out some ideas.

I always tell them that it hasn't been modified...meaning, I wasn't the one that modified it.

I'm an insurance agent and it's very important to be honest and specific about your car. Insurance company's can add what's called endorsement's to your policy to add for those extra features.
