Ok, my wife and I moved from FL to TN in Jan.

When we got to TN, we looked at diff Insurance companies and noted that with combined Home/Car Insurance from State Farm, we would be saving $400.00+/yearly and get better "Car Insurance" coverage than Geico.

State Farm calls us and told us they need our "OLD" drivers license #'s from FL or the policy will be cancelled ....... WHY?? Hell if I know. We turned those licenses over when we got our TN licenses we tell them and don't remember the #'s. Isn't this all on record anyway? They have our SS#'s.... damn.

If I call the state of FL and ask for them, they surely won't give them to me over the phone and it'll take a week to get them.
If I call Geico and ask for them they'll be like........ WHY??

Questions:

1--- Why does State Farm need our license #'s when surely they can find this info out themselves?
2--- How do I go about getting the #'s QUICKLY?

1. They need it to properly check your driving records and they probably could get the info themselves but they have every right to ask you to provide that information.

BTW, if you fill out any credit apps in the near future try putting "find it yourself" in the part where they ask for your previous address. Let us know how that goes.

2. You don't have any old checks with that info? Maybe your bank has it on file?

You normally write your driver's license on your checks? I know stores used to do that back in the day, but I haven't written a check in a store in a long time...and I'm not sure they even do that any longer.

Well, why did you even post when you have to make that statement? The answer is they still do as no state uses SSN's for DL numbers, so ID theft is greatly reduced.

Actually, several states are still using SSNs for DL#s. Arkansas and Missouri are two that I can think of off the top of my head. They ARE phasing it out but approximately half of the DL searches we run in those two states alone can be done because their DL#s ARE their SSNs.

ETA - But for the OP, it is possible for them (in TN) to get your DL# that you had in Florida with your name and DOB. With your DL# they can then get your driving report.

Yea', it's just strange that they want the old numbers is all. They may have a right to ask but the information is at their fingertips as they took them here in TN at the License Bureau when we got our new ones **LOL**

Sounds like they just don't want to try to get your DL#s. It's not hard and as an insurance company they should know what to do. Just tell them that you and your wife never memorized your drivers licenses (what with the one alpha and something like 12 numeric). Maybe you've got an agent that's new on the job?

As for the Agent that's here locally, she's the one that stated she got an email from them "State Farm" saying they needed the old #'s or they'd cancel the contract. I was almost tempted to stay with Geico......... Well, we'll see what happens as I still may.
Someone's helping me out on the Forum here and I'll get it figured. I'll also post a follow up as to "WHY" they could'nt do this # searching themselves :)

...because even though I rarely write checks, the last few times I did a DL was not needed. With electronic checks...the check goes through the machine, it endorses it, etc and then you go your way. They sometimes ask for ID, but they don't write the number down. Heck...most stores only require a signature as the machines will do the rest.

I never see anyone writing down the license number anymore.
