Car Insurance: Comprehensive Question

My car got nicked on the side of the street while it's parked. Never found out who hit it... I have comprehensive coverage with a $500 deductible... and I got a quote for $1100 for repairs. It's mostly cosmetic damage but the paint is damaged and now it's starting to rust.

So, for those of you who claimed comprehensive before, did your insurance cost jump afterwards? If so, by how much?

Car is a 05' with 51k miles on it so it's not exactly a junker and I plan to keep it for at least a couple more years.

Thanks!

It shouldn't jump by that much, stuff like this happens all the time, broken glass windows, etc. Theres no doubt you're going to get it fixed.

If they want to be dicks and raise your rates, switch your policy over to another insurer.

My car got rammed in the side while I was inside a restaurant. I thought the damage was extensive, so I went ahead and contacted my insurance. As it turned out, they never found the guy (of course), I got an accident on my record, and the damage was barely over my $500 deductible. What a screwing.

In my case, my insurance didn't go up with Nationwide because I've been with them for years, but when I priced another company a few months later, it showed up and increased their quote.

I went to another place and the guy quoted me $700 in a shop that's not as professional as the $1100 one...

damn now it's really tough to decide to claim the $500 deductible or not...

shops that aren't as pro as others will most likely...

give you a not so OEM fit part... they will not blend in the paint.

I got rear ended. I don't know a good body shop. i went with one their company recommended. They promised me OEM bumper. I did not get. They gave me a rear bumper that didn't fit right. on the driver side tail light is there about a 3 cm gap that is not present on oppsite side. They did not blend in the paint. In this case they should of sprayed lightly on my trunk and quarter panels to make the bumper blend in a little more. It sticks out after a nice wax job on a sunny day. Overall any normal daily driving person wouldn't see that. me on the other i noticed EVERYTHING.

Listen, how much does the car matter to you?

Is it some beater you just want to keep looking decent, go to the guy who will do a decent job for less money.

You're paying for comprehensive insurance for this type of situation, unless you like giving money away.

Shoot, when I was with Liberty Mutual, back in the 80's, I made a claim on a $700 hit and run accident estimate. When I got the check from the insurance company, they'd sent me $470......on an insurance policy with $100 deductible! I went down to their local office, and asked them how they came up with that figure? They sat me down, and we compared my estimates with their adjustor's estimates, and almost immediately the difference showed up.

While my estimate, from a reputable body shop, called for $30/hour labor, theirs showed labor at $17/hour!! When I asked them where they expected me to be able to get quality body work for that price, they told me that they used a body shop, in just about the worst part of town, that did very good quality work for that price. Yeah........

I pretty much bullshi**ed them into believing that I had free legal service, and that I'd sue their company's butts off (I was in the navy at the time, and we did get free legal services......not for suing people, but they didn't know that!!), and was it really worth it to them to go through all that for $130?? I got a check from them for the difference within the week! 😀

OP, ask around, and find out what shops people you know have used, and which ones they'd recommend, then figure out from that whether it's worth claiming on your insurance. Since it's a hit and run accident on you, it shouldn't affect your insurance, since it was someone else's fault. If you have uninsured motorist coverage, it might be covered under that. 🙂

I had somebody kick my driver's side view mirror, scratch and dent my driver side door. Total cost fixed from the dealer was $736. With a $500 deductible, I said screw it, and paid for it all myself. I'd rather spend the extra $236 than deal with the possibility of my insurance rates going up, and dealing with the damn insurance company.

^ i've always wondered in cases like that what i would do...

yea i'm paying for the insurance but why am i scared to use it... its possbile for them to make that 236$ in the course of say 4 years if they jack it up $25 every 6 months and such. but u would think for 236$ it shouldn't make your rates do ANY higher since thats aleast how much u pay every 6 months and its not like u keep getting into accidents.

a lady nicked my mirror housing. i took $200 for it and called it good. someone side swiped my door and i'm currently looking for a direct bolt on replacement door. under 200$ to get that fixed.
