Ok. So someone smacked the rearend of my car in the parking lot. They left a note with their phone number. What is the best course of action to take?

I figured this:
1: Do not move. Leave car in its original position.
2: Call Police Deparment and get an officer on the scene.

now what? should i call the person or wait for the police? Thanks.

A dent. It is not actually my car. My girlfriend called and told me this happened.

She just called back and she said her mom says not to call the police! Ha!

As far as I know a report needs to be filied. Maybe I am wrong but I would want to get the police involved if i plan on getting the other persons insurance company to cover it.

Call the police. Get a police report.

Then call them and get their insurance info, etc. and get it taken care of.

wtf... if the person wouldn't pay for it, they wouldn't have left their #.

by calling the police they can get in trouble for 'leaving the scene of an accident' or 'hit and run'

don't be a douche. call the #, I'm sure they'll tell you to go get an estimate

if it is just a tiny little thing... call the phone number and ask how they want to handle it.

if there is damage to any extent, get a police report.

and tiny little dent in the bumper is not a reason to make a huge fuss if the person who did it will make it right.

When my car was legally parked, and got backed up into by a suburban, and wrecked the hood and bumper completely, we did not file a police report, but rather the lady who hit my car called up her insurance company, and we brought my car in and her insurance company fixed it... they didn't require any police report. This is in Michigan, I'm not sure about other states. (When you hit a legally parked car in MI, it's one of the only types of accidents where you are considered at fault and your insurance company has to pay for it. MI is a no-fault state)

Always gotta talk to the police. Best course would be to call your insurance company, they'll tell you what to do. Just calling the person and dealing with it outside the confines of police/insurance is a bad idea, they'll try screwing you for sure, and you won't be able to do anything then.

If you get insurance companies involved, won't it raise the insurance rates on both ends of the situation?

I am in IL. I am not sure of the law on hitting a legally parked car. She is going to the police. She is convinced without a police report there is nothing that can be done.

His girlfriends insurance company shouldn't ever have to know about it, it should all be taken care of by the other person's insurance company. Assuming the other person tells the truth.

WTF do you/does she not understand?

This person is owning up to what they did - they bumped into your car, and are OBVIOUSLY willing to pay for it. If you call the police it is a possibility they will end up in REAL trouble over this. THIS IS WHY THEY LEFT THEIR NUMBER. THEY ARE WILLING TO PAY FOR IT.

If you call the insurance company their RATES WILL GO UP.

In all honesty, WTF. Call the g-damn phone number and work it out. Asshole.

thats not true either. i would get my insurance company involved, and have them deal with the other person's insurance. you are paying them to take care of situations like this. Most of time they will cut you a check immediately and then fight the other person's insurance for the money.

yours shouldnt go up, there is no reason to. the accident was not your fault. unless you live in a no-fault state, which I would highly advise you do not contact your insurance.

Also if you do call your insurance company you are going to have to pay them the deductible, which I bet is probably more than just having the damn dent pulled out
