find a honda accord or civic. it'll have to be older than other cars in the range because hondas are better at reliability to begin with. i think you can get a completely new kia or hyundai for that or maybe a little more. of course, those cars suxors.

Any particular type of car you have in mind? 4 door, coupe, SUV?

I guess for about 8500-9000 you could find a nice 95-96 Nissan maxima in the classifieds. It's a great car, has a very smooth V6.

You're generally better off buying used rather than new. Look at a model that's one or two years old. That way you're letting someone else take the major hit on depreciation and you've still got a good, late model vehicle. Take a look at rental agencies. (Enterprise, Hertz, etc.) They turn over a percentage of their fleets annually and you can pick up some good deals. If you want a recommendation on a specific car, I swear by Volvos. Not the sexiest things on the road but definitely some of the safest and most reliable. I drive an '85 740GLE and the wife drives an '82 240DL. Odometers on both are about to pass 200,000 miles so the cars are just about broken in. :)

1996 or 1997 Ford Contour SE. 2.5L V6 w/ 5 speed, leather, moon roof, etc etc are going for about that price. I drive one, I luv it. I'm not only a client, I run the mailing list for the car!
