I understand that they take heat off of the engine and uses it to heat up air, but im pretty confused as to how. Anyone know?

Your car has antifreeze (coolant) that runs through the engine. It also runs through a thing called a heater core. There are tubes filled with circulating coolant that the air passes over, which then heats it and it is blown into your car.

Or somethin' like that ;)

your car has some coolant lines that go upto the heater/ac duct. The fan in their blow overs the hot pipes that have the hot engine coolant flowing through them.

man don't lie to the man.

its really a bunch of gnomes living in the car. when you turn on the heater they start a little fire and start waving little fans blowing the hot air into the ca.r

I thought that was only on German cars.

if your heater core is leaking, you will enjoy a slight antifreeze smell along with blinding fog on your windows.

I always thought it must be something like a radiator kind of thing, so how does the temperature go from the highest to just cold air in grades?

thats pretty much it......unless the cars is an old Aussie GMH or Ford Falcon from the 1960's...they had an electric heater which ran off the car battery.

english marthafarker! Do you speak it?

I love watching the fools rev their engine upon startup. They rev the thing to no end in 10-20 degree weather as soon as they start it. Talk about killing you motor. I almost want to kncok on their window and tell them "hey, you're killing your engine. Good luck!"

It's a mixing system. When you have it set to hot air, all the incoming air is routed over the heatercore. When you set it for partial, it mixes outside air after the heatercore.

some of the old Ford V8's used in Falcon's during the 70's needed a good rev in the morning just to keep them idling....bloody points distributers and really bad thermostats on the Hot air chokes did nothing for cold weather starting.

I used to hate driving my old 76 ZG Fairlane in winter...it took on average of 10 minutes before it warmed up sufficently to be able to drive it out of the driveway with out the coughing and stalling.

I thank god every day for EFI and electronic ignitions....makes cold weather starts so much easier...just turn the key and wait for a minute or so before the engine is warmed up.

no, no, german cars have electrical gremlins, not gnomes.
