A friend of mine went to turn on his heater today and it makes a strange noise, wierd thing is that it only does it when heat is directed at the defroster vents, and not the foot vents, that is the part that is throwing me. He took this short vid that may help out. Let me know what you think.

You mean when the A/C is full on, it functions correctly? If that's the case, then one of the sensors or relays for the dash panel switches is borked.

No, it does it no matter full on or low. It only does it when heat is directed at defroster vents though.

  1. When the A/C is full on, it functions correctly? (Spins the compressor?)

Turn the A/C on to full cold. Does the clutch engage the compressor long enough to spin it for a while?

Not sure, I'll have to get ahold of him and find out or look at it tomorrow, all I have to go on right now is that vid.

If it keeps doing that it will wear through the "pad" on the a.c. clutch and then wear through the rivets holding the pressure plate on, then the whole a.c. pulley will come apart.

I had a G.M. with a 3.8l engine do this.

Your car is a Ford right? see those wires on the top left of the compressor? unplug them.

If it is the A/C compressor,(Most Likely) he can just disconnect it until he can have it repaired/ replaced!

yep, ford exploder, i'll have him unplug it. Will this affect his heat?

No, I dont know why but in all (most?) cars, the compressor locks when using the defroster, when you unplug it, the compressor wont try to lock, it is just a temporary fix.

The ac compressor runs on defrost using the evaporator to remove moisture in the air, unfogging the windows.

If the clutch goes out I think it will remain unengaged, not working but not locked up.

...in all (most?) cars, the compressor locks when using the defroster...

In most cars, the compressor cycles when using the defroster, or A/C.
