car gurus help

I drive a 5spd 87 Honda accord. I don't know much about cars, so I hope someone can help. Anyways, I am assuming that the shift syncros is going out. 3rd gear grinds rather loudly, although it does it sometimes, but most of the time it grinds. 5th gear ALWAYS grinds. No way to stop it from doing it. Reverse will grind, only if I don't alternate between 3rd and 4th then shift to reverse. 1st and 2nd gear are perfectly fine.

anyone know what might be the problem? I got a new clutch maybe about 30,000 miles ago, and although it helped a little, it didn't completely eliminate the issue. and the car is at about 236,000 miles.

thx

Could be something to do with the shifter linkages/cables if R is over by 1st instead of below 5th on the shifter. R, 1st, 3rd, and 5th could all be using the same cable/linkages/whatever the hell yours uses if that makes more sense. Probably just your syncros though. Changed the fluid lately? Doubt that would make a huge difference but its worth a try. Other then that I'd just live with it. Its an 87 honda let em grind. When 5th goes just stay in 4th 🙂.

I agree, I would try and have all the linkages and cables adjusted to spec..

If that doesen't help.. oh well, you'd need a tranny rebuild to fix it.
