Car for family of four

Anyone got suggestions for a practical car that would be economically smart(price and mpg) while still having decent interior room for 4(2 adults, 2 young teens). We looked at the Camry, Corolla, Prius, Fusion, and the Focus so far. The Camry and Fusion of course had the most room, but the MPG of course suffers. Of the two, I liked the Camry. Now of the smaller ones, the corolla was too small, the focus seemed doable, and the prius had a decent amount of room in the back. I like the MPG the prius gets, but I'd prefer something in gas only. I haven't got to sit in a civic yet, they seem to get the best mpg in that size range. How is the new nissan altima, they claim about the same mpg as the civic?

Update: Bought a Prius tonight

Mazda CX-5. I own one and drive my 2 kids daily. Great MPG, fine car, not expensive, you sit much higher than in sedans.

The cx5 isn't bad, just not what I was particularly looking for. The wife has a mkx, so one crossover is enough. How does it perform with that 4 cylinder?

How is the back seat space in the Altima? I guess I'll have to check that one out. Why would that mpg on the 13 model be that much higher than the 12?

Searching around on the toyotas dealers website here, I found this one,and it's heavily discounted.

I dunno what to make of these hybrids, 40mpg, but what about maintenance on them? Why go hybrid and not get a prius? I dunno.

Fusion hybrid is a pretty well received vehicle, can probably do a good deal soonishly as the new model is coming out pretty soon, new will get 47 mpg too. New fusion also gets nearly 40 mpg in gas only variants too if you care to wait.

The reason you'd go for these hybrids over a Prius is for the much larger vehicle, and in general they are more comfortable and more car like.

Also check out the new Passat with the TDI, 40mpg and it has a ton of room inside!

2013 Altima, best in class mileage.

Or 2012 because right now any dealer that still has them is giving them away for free due to the new model year. It's a great time to buy one.

Don't make your kids suffer the humiliation of an econobox at their age, they don't deserve that.

Well anytime you can get a quarter million bucks off list price, you gotta go for it.

brand new 2013 accord apparently has a massive back seat

early reviews also say that the CVT in it is excellent

2012's MPG is quite a bit lower though. Granted, the savings may make up the difference, but 2013 was the first year of 38MPG HWY, whereas the 2012 gets a top of 32MPG HWY.

Just something to consider.

Shaping up to be Accord and Fusion at the top of the class. It's the first genuinely handsome car Honda has put out in quite awhile.

Don't consider the Prius as a "hybrid" when you're comparing. The hybrid powertrain hasn't generated any more maintenance issues than a comparable gas car (fewer, in fact). Just compare by roominess, price, MPG, and how much you like looking at it and driving it. It may not win based on those factors, but it's a little unfair to penalize it for being a hybrid. Unless you want to do your own work on it, I suppose...

Really? REALLY? Wow. A brand-new car is somehow "humiliating". Tell you what, if his kids don't want to be seen in a Honda or Toyota, they can get a job and buy their own luxury car.

I was thinking more along the lines of, "If they're humiliated to ride in an econobox, then you've raised them wrong".

It looks like rickon66 is on the same page as me.

Well, I went with the Prius Three. MSRP was around 27.2k, got it out the door for 26.9k. I could have probably got it for less, but I'm okay with it. Had them throw in a Homelink mirror with it. They tried pushing the extended warranty, but I seen where people online were getting it online for alot less. They wanted almost 2k for 7/125k, online I'm seeing it for around 1.3k. Has anyone done one of these online warranty deals? I'm also looking at possibly doing one for the wife's Lincoln MKX, it's price seems higher at around 1.7k for the 7year/125k.

On the ride home it said I got around 55.1MPG which ain't too bad, but it was only a 25 mile trip. Hopefully it'll stay above 50mpg.
