Car fanatics & PC game fanatics: What is the best racing game for the PC?

I'm gettin real sick and tired of GT3. It's so darned beautiful, but I will not spend $300 on a console. I just can't! I'd rather spend that elsewhere...like computer parts, or saving up for some 17" BBS RX wheels. What I can do is spend $40 on a PC game:p. So tell me, what is the best car racing game? I don't like NASCAR, or F1 type games. I like games like NFS: Porsche Unleashed and TOCA. Are there any games like these that are coming out in the near future sporting graphics better than GT3?

My friends will constantly hound me about not having the best car game on the planet. They'll keep rubbing in that PS2 is better than PC. I gotta have a game that showcases the PC's power in a car game. I GOTTA! I hate GT3(actually I loved GT2, but I comforted myself knowing my PC had better graphics).

So...any good car games?

argh, that sucks!

We've got the GeForce that can do T&L and FSAA...but that's not enough to compete with PS2? That sucks donkey balls...I want bragging rights!!

Yea...I love NFS: Porsche Unleashed, I just thought there might be a better racing game than this out there.

hmm

Pro Rally 2001 by UbiSoft is a really good rally racing game. So is Mobil 1 Championship.

And of course NFS5. There is a new game in development right now called World Touring Car Champiohsip (something like that..not sure)...and that's just AMAZING! The screenshots are beautiful!!

Yes, I am anxiously awaiting WTC

here is a preview screenie: Who wants some Lotus action?!

The entire preview article itself: Preview

Where might I find info on the Mobil 1 Championship and Ubisoft's Rally car game?

Have any of you tried that Swedish Touring Car racing game? I thought the first one was good, I can only wonder what the sequel will be like.

Need For Speed: Motor City should prove to be a terrific game. It's the first massively multiplayer racing game. It has a working economy where you can buy, sell, trade, upgrade, paint, etc. you car(s) then race for money or cars. The screens look stunning, maybe not PS2, but can you paint your car, then race some guys from different countries for their rides @ 1600x1200x32 in GT3?? Release dates have been floating around, but I think it's supposed to be ready Q1/2 '01.

I like Midtown Madness 1 & 2, but they aren't realistic... but then I prefer arcade-type racers.

The only place I can find info on Mobil1 Rally and Pro Rally 2001 is from Gamespot.com

That's it. These games aren't very popular here in North America...I guess people don't like rally games...oh well.

It's not that exactly (though it probably wouldn't, I'm sure Rampage or NV20 will) but the problem is what % of gamers that will want this game actually have that hardware?
It's like aRyll, you have to go by the baseline performance, and lets face it many many gamers (including myself) use V3/TNT2 class, the V3 was one of the best selling retail cards ever, and even more use really low cost like Savage4/TNT2 M64 or even integrated...none of those cards can come close to a PS2...
we have to wait until say a GeForce2MX is standard (maybe nVidia's core logic sets?) and then we can start competing with PS2...PS2 has a gauranteed level of performance, PC doesn't.

You should try Sports Car GT. It doesn't have the preetiest graphics out there, but most sports car freaks drive it. Control is very realistic, almost F355 Challenge level, and you get to drive cars like BMW M3, Mustang, McLaren GTR, Lister Storm, Callaway C12, Porsche 911, CLK GTR.

Sports CarGT is a very good game. I've been playing it ever since I got my Logitech Wingman Formula Force Wheel and now I have a Voodoo5 5500, which makes it look so sweet. Takes awhile to learn the tracks, but once you do, it's great fun. Another bonus is that you should be able to find it cheap and it won't tax todays systems.

Another cool game, although not entirely cutting edge graphics, is Sierra's Viper Racing. I picked it up for $6 CDN(that's free in the US! :D ). It too takes some time to get the hang of, but you get to drive Dodge Vipers! What more could a guy ask for?

As an owner of a good PC and a PS2 as of three nights ago lets put this to rest - at least for now. THe PS2 is fun, and I love it and don't regret buying at all it but clearly the graphics for a game such as Midnight Club are grossly inferior to those in NFSV on a Voodoo 3 3000 (yes an old video card!). The PS2 is nice, and GT3 makes my mouth water looking at those videos but I have the distinct impression that it won't be long before there is a PC game we can put on to make PS2 owners just a little bit jealous. GT3 is going to be fun and play very well but if we're just talking graphics the PC still is pretty damn strong (BTW yes I did see the mustang model for GT3, it truly is beautiful). Clearly there is a major difference between the currently available PS2 games in terms of graphics and GT3, I guess that crew really learned what they could do with the thing. All I have really accomplished now is that I had to buy the PS2 as well as continue to upgrade the computer when needs arise :(

AF09 OMG that sounds AWESOME! NFS motor city is going to rock !! Assuming of course they maintain physicis similar to NFSV or NFS1/2 and don't go back to 3/4

I second the votes for Sierra's Viper Racing and EA's Sports Car GT. The first one is a bit older, but the career mode definitely tests your driving skills. There are many addons for the latter, but I could never quite get into it because all the car tuning was just too deep for me.

Looks like I'm getting Sports Car GT. I never liked the Viper. The Corvette ZR-1 kicked way more ass as America's elite supercar.

I also have Viper Racing but it's sad that Sierra didn't release ANY updates or extra tracks or even a track editor. the physics were tops and why in the world would they not release a track editor ??
