Since I have no one to buy a gift for this Christmas (i.e. girlfriend) I have decided to purchase a gift for myself during this giving time of year.

I have decided that cat-back exhuast for my car is the gift that keeps giving. I have a '99 Cobra and have pondered a couple of options that I am seeking advice on. Any help would be appretiated:

1) Flowmaster - I hear they have the best sound, and they are the cheapest. However, huge drawback is that they are not stainless steel, and they corrode rather quickly...that is bad.

2) Borla - Not very loud and menacing which is a downfall, but they are all stainless and have a high overall quality. Another con is that they seem to be the most expensive, or damn close.

3) Steeda - This I don't know all that much about. I know they are all stainless which is a must, and that the sound is loud and throaty. Can anyone provide any additional info for Steeda exhaust.

These are the choices that I have narrowed it down to. If anyone has additional options please enlighten me, or if you have experience with any of the aforementioned products please give me your thoughts. I am looking for the loudest possible selection for a cat-back system (I will be getting H or X pipe in a couple of months but not now), and considering I live in MA I think that anything not stainless is not an option.

Thanks for your help,
GSOFY

Hey, "loud and cheap"; that would be my son's mother. *ba-dum-bum-kish!* Thanks, I'll be here thru Saturday!

Anyway, you always want to go for Stainless Steel. Most SS systems come w/a lifetime rust-thru warranty, which should tell you something. Why spend $500 on a cheap system that will go to pot in a year when you can spend $700 on a system that will outlast the car? Know what I mean, jellybean? :)

I know there are a number of Mustang-only forums on the net...that would probably be a better place to get actual brand/model# recommendations.

Good luck.

Yea glasspacks are legal in NC. I did inspections and all it says is you have to have a muffler that does not leak. I put a glass pack on my firebird.

But I have a flowmaster on my Monza and it sounds good. And where do you live that corrosion is a problem? And even if it is get some engine paint and paint it before and after you put it on. Will protect it and make it hide under tha car at the same time.

I live in Mass. along the ocean so salt is a big factor to deal with. It's too bad because I love the flowmaster sound. I think I am still leaning more towards steeda, but that is the only brand that I have not found testimonials.

MichaelD

you are 100% correct. I have priced steeda around $625 and I think that would be a much better option than the flowmasters that i would have to replace in 2 years anyway.

Thanks for your help guys.

I am in Wilmington NC and have the beach and salt a little, but my flowmaster (without paint or anything else) looks good and is nt that bad.

And look what roger put up.

I know for f-body's borla's are one of the louder exhausts. I'm not sure if their mustang equivalent is quieted down or not.

I'd recommend a cutout. Even if you get an exhaust too, a cutout is nice for a few extra hp for only $35.

I plan on running just a cutout as soon as I get the ambition to get it installed. :)

Yup...it would be a lot cheaper to make the Flowmaster last longer than to get a Steeda...

Do the world a favor and just wedge a potato up the exhaust pipe so everyone doesn't have to hear the damn thing. If you want the loud exhaust noises, record some onto cd, and play it on your radio.

That's actually pretty funny! If I hadn't just put a QOTW in my sig about 20 minutes ago, ^^^ that would be it.

I've got GT40 equal length headers, BBK off-raod h-pipe, and flow master american thunder exhaust. I had them "chromed" by a friend of mine. They still look brand new. ;)

HP Coating does good work.

Don't get flowmasters. Every damn car in the world already has Flows on it. Steeda has most all thier stuff made by other companies anyway, and you could likely buy it for cheaper from the original manfacturer.

Borla provided the OEM exhasut for the 2000 Cobra R. They make good stuff. If you want top quality I'd go with Borla or Bassani, but they're both pretty damn expensive. My car has a Dynomax catback on it, and I'm happy with it, but a lot of people don't think it's loud enough.

Loud is not = hp

Cause he thinks it sounds cool.

17 case fans in a computer doesn't make it faster, but that doesn't stop a lot of the people on here from doing it.

Plus there's something driving by with a mean @$$ exhaust that makes heads turn, unlike the fart sound coming from ricers

Here's a good tech question for you guys;

Why does a internal combustion engine make so much noise that they needs mufflers ?

Let's see who the really smart people are ;)

I will post the correct answer later today.

The exhaust gas leaves the engine at high pressure - having a muffler "stifles" the noise, and at the same time produces backpressure

They don't need mufflers. Internal combustion engine cars run a lot better without mufflers. :D

Soundwaves created by combustion.

Let me rephrase the question, why do the sound waves created by combustion make such a loud noise ?

When the exhaust valve opens it releases gases at high pressure into the exhaust pipe (low pressure), which creates fast sound waves that are traveling faster than the gas (where the noise comes from).

(Just guessing)
