I found this;

Engine makes a ticking noise

* The valves in your engine need to be adjusted
* There is a lot of sludge in your engine which is stopping oil from circulating properly
* The engine's valve lifters are collapsed
* One or more of the engine's valves are stuck

I know she got pretty low on gas the other day, anyway she picked up the sludge in the bottom of her gas tank?

It could be a variety of different problems, but to try and diagnose such a fault without more info is near impossible.

You first need to narrow down the area in which the noise is coming from, and under what circumstances.

Does the frequency of the ticking noise increase with speed of car/engine?

Are you confident that the noise is coming from under the bonnet?

Is it a certain rev range or at a certain speed?

I?d personally just take it to a car mechanic. They?ll most likely be able to pin point the problem after a few basic road tests.

ticking is usually a valve issue but could be some other things. Take it to a qualified mechanic; your l33t casemodding/watercooling skills don't necessarily translate into auto mechanic aptitude :p

A bad CV joint can make a ticking sound as well...actually it is more a clicking sound...

as least they did on the cars back in the 80's and early 90's...

sorry if this doesn't help much...

This could be the issue if it were an old car. Valve lifters are very strong springs that close the valve after the camshaft has depressed the spring, and thus opened the inlet or outlet valve.

Taking off the cam cover for an inspection should quickly resolve this possibility.

I recently had this issue on my car. Lol, the car was brand new and i had only done about 2000 miles.

I had both rear drive shafts replaced. You could hear it under hard acceleration and reversing.

If it is a lifter, they're not that hard to replace.

And, don't wear a bonnet like that RichUK wants you to do.

Come again.

I wouldn't suggest he tries anything. I would suggest just taking it to a garage for a car technician to investigate.

one of my cars used to do this, turns out there was a hold in the exhaust manifold or something?

does it only do it while you are driving?

Definitely check the tires for rocks if it only happens while going down the road. I have had that happen several times, and it makes a clicking noise when the rock hits the pavement.
