Car door lock going to be a problem in New England?

The little metal thing on the car door lock broke over the summer. So far it hasn't been a problem, but I'm worried about water freezing in there during the winter here. Is it possible to replace that metal thing or do I need to get the entire lock replaced? How much will that end up costing me?
