ok a while back I was having issues with rough idling and figured it was the m.a.f. cleaned it out, inspected all of my vacuum hoses (replaced one) and the car stopped idling roughly. now a new issue has arisen and i am totally perplexed. practically every stop the while decelerating, the car will jump in rpm's slighty, then just drop to zero. I have to turn the car on at practically every stop unless I can push the pedal before a complete stop to give the car a bit of gas.

I am thoroughly annoyed at this, but i am not sure where to start. My f-i-law took the car in and changed the fuel filter, (which looked pretty bad) and suggested on changing the fuel lines and possibly the fuel pump. I changed the spark plugs just two weeks ago in the hopes that it was a fouled plug (i have an oil leak that makes it's way into the spark plug chamber). I am looking to start at the cheapest solution to the most expensive. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I should start?
 
The same thing happened to me with my Subaru - it turned out to be a clogged egr valve. I just took it off and soaked it in carb cleaner.
 
yeah egr valve, iacv, fast thermal idle valve on some honda. I had this happen before the easiest solution IMO is try and adjust the idle screw. most are turn it left to increase the idle so it doesn't die on you. Easy on only took about 30 seconds. make and model of car might help a bit

only two of the four were fouled. I ended up replacing all six. since the change they have been in good condition.
 
I had a similar problem in my wife's Oldsmobile. It ended up being a bad break booster. RPMs were a tad erratic, and every time the brakes were hit it would stall.
 
I thought I checked all of my vacuum lines. I guess I'll have to start over.

It seems i might have a busted valve. Ithe first photo in the link, shows a valve over the airbox, that had a crack in it with a hole. Guess i need to replace that sucker.

I'm hoping this is it. I'm gonna change it out today and hopefully will have some luck this time.

as for the oil leak into the spark plugs, when replacing plugs, how do we keep the oil out? arent we supposed to put some sort of grease on the plugs?
