Car Dealership never registered my extended warranty

I'm not sure anyone will know this, but I didn't know where else to ask besides a dealership which would profit from my confusion.

I bought a used Nissan at 20k miles, and purchased an extended warranty for 7 years/100,000 miles. The dealership never registered my warranty with Nissan, so when I took my car into a different dealership today to have some warranty work done they denied my warranty claim. They denied the claim before I had any work done, so I'm not out of any money.

I don't feel that I will get any benefit from having the extended warranty, or at least enough to justify its cost. Since the warranty was never registered, can I get a full refund on the warranty instead of the prorated amount? I know the dealership will try to prorate the refund or start the warranty from today (with no warranty) if I ask them.

They should refund you the full amount since you never had the warranty, but good luck getting it.

The warranty probably wasn't a Nissan extended warranty. Reading the fine print is important on those shady warranties offered up on used cars.

How long is the basic warranty on Nissans? Certainly it's transferable and at least 36K, no?

Yea, it will be tough to get a full refund on ANYTHING after the fact from a car dealership.

I'll double check the paperwork today to make sure its not a 3rd party, but the brochures they gave me were put out by Nissan. Nissan Gold warranty or something.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, probably a warranty through some 3rd party company. When I bought my used Prizm in 97 I got an extended warranty for $1000. About two months before it was up, I had to have a CV joint and some related stuff replaced, came to about $780 that I didn't have at the time, so it worked out pretty well for me. The weird thing was that I had a $100 deductible, but only had to pay $75

You should not accept anything less than the full refund because you did not receive what you paid for. Prorated my ass, you got 0% of what you paid for, you should get 100% of the cost back. If they give you any grief, contact the Better Business Bureau, whatever department it is in your state that handles consumer fraud, the press, whatever. Or maybe the dealer you bought it from will honor the warranty work themselves for the full stated period (which would probably be cheaper than refunding your money.)

I came home and got my paperwork together (I do have the official Nissan warranty) and returned to the dealership. It turns out, the brilliant service manger forgot to scroll to the next screen to validate my warranty. It was there all along. The excellent help I receive from Nissan dealerships is why I'm still trying to have warranty work done on a problem I've had for 40,000 miles now.
