A cat with eight remaining lives survived a harrowing 12-mile ride this morning in the engine compartment of a car.

The kitten, about 8 weeks old, was resting in Annee Canos' desk drawer after his hot, noisy ride. The little black cat seems fine, said Canos.

Canos, who lives in an apartment complex in Carmichael, heard a cat crying when she came home from work on Tuesday.

"I thought somebody was neglecting their pet," said Canos.

She asked the apartment maintenance man to help her find the meowing feline. He could not find the animal.

Canos heard it again later that night but still the cat could not be found.

This morning, the maintenance man told Canos he saw the cat under her car. When she left for work she slowly backed up her car while the maintenance man watched to make sure the cat was not run over.

"There were no cries, so I went to work," Canos said.

She drove to work from her home at Fair Oaks Boulevard and Marconi Avenue to Florin-Perkins and Fruitridge roads in South Sacramento.

Still worried about the cat's meow, Canos looked under the hood when she got to work. She did not see or hear anything.

"There was no bloody kitty," she said.

But when she walked about 50 feet from the car she heard a meow. She then knew she was either hearing things or a cat was caught in her engine compartment.

The yard manager at the storage container company where she works as the operations manager first jacked up her car. Then, with the aid of cat food, the cat came into view.

"He had to coax the cat out from where my radiator fan is," with cat food, she said. "There are no broken bones. There was no blood. I won't be taking him to a shelter. I'm going to keep him. Right now, I'm calling him Gear Box."
