Our secrateries husband was cleaning out their car - a late model Jeep Cherokee bought used a few months ago. He came across something strange when sliding the seat around to vacuum under it.

There was a small device attached with a magnet to the seat rail. It's a shiny metal cylinder, about 3/8" diameter, and about 1/2 inch long. What looks like a rare earth magnet is stuck to one end by the magnetic attraction (so the case must be steel). The other end is kind of dome shaped - the center might be raised about 1/8" It looks like clear epoxy over some type of circuitry and a small, very fine wire (antenna?)

You can unscew this top part, and inside are 3 small hearing aid style batteries (which test as dead). The marks on the batteries are "AG4" and "Sun King" and some asian characters.

Sorry, no pics. I'll try to get some.

Any idea what this is?? It looks for all the world like what I would expect a "bug" to look like. You know, like in the movies :p It doesn't look like what I expect a microphone to look like - with the hard plastic dome on one end, etc. So what's it doing?

With the low power this thing must draw, I'm guessing that the range of any transmitter must be very small - I sugested they look under the vehicle for some kind of receiver that maybe retransmits with more power, or stores data for later retrieval.

So, is this a bug, or have I just been watching to many movies? :p

AFAIK the owners aren't involved in anything shady. I doubt they'd be talking about finding a bug in their car if they were. But the car was bought used. I'm wondering if it originated at a government auction after being confiscated - DEA maybe?
