Car break in? How to do it properly...

My G25 came with 13 miles on the OD from he factory. It has a 7600 RPM redline. I have not taken it over 5k yet, and even then only by accident and for a half second. Mostly driven in the 2-3 rpm range, even when accelerating.

How do I properly break this car in, and how much should I worry about it?

Sadly, when reading the topic, I thought you were asking on how to forcefully enter a vehicle, not break it in mechanically through driving.

Well, Im sort of old school, but when I bought a new car, I'd do an oil change in the first few hundred miles, and replace it with synthetic, and vary your speed for the first 1K miles or so.

What does the owner's manual say?

If all else fails, RTFM FTW :D

With today's engines it isn't as critical - just use the guideline in your manual. Keep the RPM down until the oil has a chance to reach normal operating temperature and vary the RPM as much as possible.

A lot of the newer cars have a certain mileage where it is considered broken in. However, it's not an absolute rule so if for example your car's break in period is 1000 miles and it's ready for service at 800 or 900 it's completely normal. Just follow the manufacturers recommended rev limit and you should be fine.

Generally speaking the worst thing you can do to a new engine is to putter around at a constant RPM and engine load. You want to work it throughout the range, accelerating and engine braking. Think city driving, not freeway. You also don't want to lug it, and certainly don't step on it while it's cold.

You need to keep alternating RPMs for any long distances. I would have kept it under 5k RPMs, but I doubt you hurt anything. I would do this for a minimum of 500 miles.

Check your manual though. All cars are different. When are you required to go in for your first oil change?

In most cases, the first 1000 miles you should warm up the engine,
drive at various rpms and then I would change the oil to Synthetic at
that mileage. The most critical part is being sure the Rings seat good
which happens early in the engines life. Synthetic oii will not allow for
proper ring seating, so normal oil is best for this. Cars that come with
synthetic in them, usually are prebroken in on the assembly line.
