Yikes, I was just down there a little while ago, and they closed off traffic in the area. From what I heard the vehicle started smoking but I'm not able to confirm. I'd posT more but I am on my iPad and am not used to browsing on it yet...

Edit: not confirmed to be a bomb yet.

EDIT2: Bloomberg confirmed that there were "consumer-grade" fireworks, a few propane tanks, some black powder and 2 clocks with wires hanging. I am wondering if it was just someone selling illegal fireworks or something. You get that a lot in the general area this time of year. They've located the license plate owner, who claimed to have given the car to a junkyard with the plates, and they are currently looking for the junkyard owner for questioning.

Oh probably just some Goldman Sachs exec having his daily dose of being car bombed. Nothing to see here. Move along folks...

Well yeah, but I just assumed that, like most commercial areas, it would be busiest during a working day.

Times Square is not a "Commercial" area, unless you mean a shopping area. Times Square is most busy on Weekends (tourism).

that live camera feed is working. I see three NYPD cars lined up and a few cops walking around. That may be ordinary for a sat night in times square though.

I hate to start throwing stones already, but I'm gonna go ahead and file this along with the underwear bomber...we didn't do anything that prevented them from carrying out their plot, the only reason they failed is because of their own shortcomings. I'm not saying that there aren't other bigger plots that aren't stopped but you just can't stop em all.

You're right that we didn't do anything that prevented this attempted bombing.

But this attempted bombing wouldn't have blown up much other than a Nissan Pathfinder. Maybe it would have broken a few windows, and the fire department would have had to put out a fire, but that's it.

Governor Paterson got down there in a hurry. I don't feel good about a blind guy driving that fast.

Really, it's amazing that there haven't been any big bombings in NYC or other major American cities since 9/11. When I was in college I remember the citiy of Marion, Indiana spent a lot of money putting big boulders around their government buildings. Just in case. Marion, Indiana. Yeah.

I am really not convinced that they are capable of stopping anything. The reason there have been no acts of terrorism in NYC over the years is because no one has the balls to go through with it.

He's got a touch screen sat/nav with voice, he's cool. Why you hatin' on the sight impaired? :awe:

Well, if it's any consolation,Ihate their freedom. 😀

This is because the government already did what they had to to initiate the current "war" (aka Greed Machine)...no reason for them to go around blowing stuff up for no reason now...

And honestly I wish I could mean that sarcastically, but for real...with everything we're doing overseas it truly is odd that nothing else has happened...terrorists supposedly hijack four planes, flew them long distances to New York City and Washington D.C. (which along with good piloting skills also shows that they were good at pinpointing where they were and where to fly too...like thats a super easy thing for low level terrorists to do...) and then committed the most heinous "terrorist attack" EVER.

Yet they cant seem to have car bombs here and there...suicide bombers here and there...something that seems to be happening overseas on a daily basis...

Not trying to start anything here as I know I will be called a dumbass, idiot, etc...thats just the nature of ATOT and those who believe whatever the government tells them...but the fact that we had a MASSIVE World Record "war" starting terrorist attack and then absolutely NOTHING afterwards for almost a decade on American soil since does seem a little suspicious...no one can deny that except for the sheeple...

I'd say it's a combination of luck, the fact that the Bush admin was fantastially good at diseminating FUD, and some small progress in anti-terrorist measures. The truth is there REALLY aren't as many suicide bombers and wack job fundamental Islamic nut cases as the wing nuts would have us believe. I'm not going to turn this into a religion thread here but there ARE over a billion Muslims in the world and not all that many suicide attacks. If the danger was as acute as it was made to seem during the height of the FUD atmosphere a few years back then we really would have seen more attacks. The reason is that it really IS amazingly easy to carry out terrorist attacks. Maybe not on the scale of 9/11 any more but most of the security measures they have put in place are a joke and can easily be either circumvented or bypassed. Just choose another target for one. I'm not arguing for more security here, I'm arguing for living in a rational world where people start to realize that bad shit can happen. And when bad shit does happen not to fly off the handle right away. Also they have been a few small successes in taking down fomenting plots, though more overseas in Europe than on US home soil.

Someone will call in soon and accept responsibility if it's real.

I'm not ruling that out but it sounds too amateurish for a real car bomb though. I mean fireworks, black powder and clock components really sound more like a hoax than a real attempt. Ammonium Nitrate isn't exactly hard to come buy and makes a much bigger bang and more effective bomb.

While I agree with you in my mind it seems like America benefited from the terrorist attack more than we should though...I mean, I look at it like this...the Bush administration had a million reasons why they wanted to go to Iraq like oil, Sadam, taking control over stuff in general (which we Americans love to do) where as Al Qaeda really had no reason other than being "terrorists" to attack us. To me GWB was just finishing up what his daddy started but couldnt accomplish because of the fact that nothing MAJOR happen, so to speak...but a big ass terrorist attack on one of Americas most popular icons seemed to do the trick to get our asses over there...and STILL there almost a decade later...not even the blunt fighting part of World War fuck 2 lasted that long (!)...and we have the most powerful army in the world against some terrorist groups...I mean REALLY...what the fuck is taking so long?! Besides of course the ongoing excuses that the media and our government give us...

What's taking so long is that the very concept of fighting terrorism with a conventional war is like trying to put out a fire with gasoline. You may kill some terrorists sure but ultimately you only play into the fanatics hands and just give them more recruiting material for the next batch of terrorists. For one completely stopping terrorism of this type simply isn't possible. You have to live in the real world and realize that religious nut jobs will always exist and be attractive to others so long as there is religion and grinding poverty. So the solution is to either work on eliminating the grinding poverty or work on eliminating the religion entirely. The former works better than the latter 😉. Once they made the decision to move into Iraq like it or not they were committed to this war for decades in one form or another. Remember the incidents that created the atmosphere that allowed the 9/11 attacks to happen occurred decades before 9/11 during the soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

Wut? Is it only considered a terrorist threat if the suspects are brown people with turbans on their heads or something? How can a bomb like this in a place like this not be considered a terrorist threat?

Troll, troll, troll your boat.

Yeah just read about this - imagine the damage it would have done if it went off. But why do it on a Saturday when there's far less traffic/people around?

You are obviously unfamiliar with Times Square, and NYC in general.

Don't be surprised, Mini Gayner neither likes the US nor wishes to ever go there. Everyone knows this, but no one cares.

Turns out the "bomb" was a couple of M80's tied to some 5 gallon drums. The M80s turned out to be duds that were just as powerful as firecrackers which set off a small fire in the car's interior.

lol, I hate those fake M80's but at least this time it worked out.
