Car bomb found in times square [updated]

Updated 5/02: Turns out the "bomb" was a couple of M80's tied to some 5 gallon drums. The M80s turned out to be duds that were just as powerful as firecrackers which set off a small fire in the car's interior.

lol, I hate those fake M80's but at least this time it worked out.

The authorities were also examining the incendiary materials discovered inside the Pathfinder by a police bomb squad on Sunday: three canisters of propane, similar to those used for barbecue grills, and two red five-gallon cans of gasoline.

Consumer-grade fireworks, resembling a model known as M-80s, were taped around the outside of the gasoline cans, according to several people briefed on the contents of the car. Two clocks with batteries, including one that resembled a child’s toy, were connected to the device by small wires.

Investigators believe that the fuses on the firecrackers had been lit, but they did not explode, the people said. The burning fuses apparently ignited a portion of the car’s interior, causing a small fire that filled the inside of the car with smoke, one law enforcement official said.

Yikes, I was just down there a little while ago, and they closed off traffic in the area. From what I heard the vehicle started smoking but I'm not able to confirm. I'd posT more but I am on my iPad and am not used to browsing on it yet...

Edit: not confirmed to be a bomb yet.

EDIT2: Bloomberg confirmed that there were "consumer-grade" fireworks, a few propane tanks, some black powder and 2 clocks with wires hanging. I am wondering if it was just someone selling illegal fireworks or something. You get that a lot in the general area this time of year. They've located the license plate owner, who claimed to have given the car to a junkyard with the plates, and they are currently looking for the junkyard owner for questioning.

Yeah just read about this - imagine the damage it would have done if it went off. But why do it on a Saturday when there's far less traffic/people around?

edit:
A federal official said it was not considered it a terrorist threat
Wut? Is it only considered a terrorist threat if the suspects are brown people with turbans on their heads or something? How can a bomb like this in a place like this not be considered a terrorist threat?

Priscilla Garner, 17, said she enjoyed the experience. “I got free ice cream, they gave us crayons to color with,” she said.

LOL did they get her age right? What kind of a 17 year old says that?

My car was smoking a few months ago, but I took it into a mechanic. Good thing the mechanic knew how to disable bombs!

I could have sworn I just heard the CNN anchor say something to the effect of "google earth has shut down their site over time square because they don't want people to see where they are moving the robots and how they are setup" .....please tell me I just imagined that.

I heard that too... Wtf ?

10 gallons of gasoline and 60 pounds of propane would have made a big fireball, but it wouldn't have been anything like Oklahoma City.

When I was in college we used to put the little 1 pound propane tanks in a cardboard box, set the box on fire and then shoot the tank. Pretty cool to do a few times. I always wanted to try a 20 pound tank, but I was a poor college student and couldn't afford to spend $50 on something so trivial.

One time one of our one pound propane tanks took off, literally. It probably went 50 feet off the ground and landed close to 100 feet away. No fireball that time.

Not that I know anything about making bombs, but 3 propane tanks, 2 gas cans, and some black powder doesn't seem like a professional job.

You mean google doesnt have a satellite in space that goes wherever i want in google earth?

CNN... news for idiots

If you google Times Square one of the first results is this:
http://www.earthcam.com/usa/newyork/timessquare/

Maybe that's what they're referring to?

(I see no picture there, but this laptop seems to choose when it would like to display Flash content, so maybe it's just me)

LOL today I heard my Canadian flatmate talking to his mum back at home on the phone. He said, "yeah we're at 86 XXX street.... yeah 86.... no there's no red car parked outside right now, you must be looking at the wrong house". She was obviously Google mapping it and they both thought it was in real time. One of the dumbest conversations I've ever listened to.

Sounds a bit like the Glasgow airport attack and the 2 London nightclub car bombs.

This one may have been directed at Viacom for South Park.

That was my thought also for a split second, but I think the Viacom building is a few blocks further up. It's funny, I worked there in the early 90s and I can't remember what street it was on...lol

EDIT: Nope, it was right in front of the building...holy crap.

By the description that's not even a bomb - there would have been plenty of pretty deflagration, but no real explosion.
