Car Before College

Going to a college 2 hrs away from my home. About 45 ppl from my HS will be going there, how many of them have cars, i dont know. Im working a pretty high paying job over the summer again, and have about 4k saved up in the bank. Would you suggest getting a used car before college, like from personal experience? I like to go places and get around a lot, trips would definately be key. Im not sure how much id want to spend though, prolly not much more than 3500 I think....but im not sure how good of a vehicle i can get for that ammoun. What are you guy's opinions on the matter?
