How does everyone seem to get a "hookup" on car audio...everyone who has a system always says "yeh i got a hookup"...
Anyways, where can i learn stuff about the basics of car audio including subs, amps, crossovers, boxes, decks, and all that good stuff? And where can i get my hookup?

Find an installer. they noramally have a good knowlege of the process. Car audio mags are a good start. They give u a general idea, but hands on is most important, As with most anything new you learn. READ READ READ
hope that helps.

Usually, it's because someone knows a friend who knows a friend, etc., that works at one of those stores. Like me, for example. I got my stereo installed for $15 (although after i had to take it out to get it repaired, I figured out how to put it back in myself.)

I used to install car stereos all dang day for free. People would knock on my door and bring me broken junk{often times people i didnt know...they would say " hey ricky told me to tell you that we are friends" }...with no harness etc. Litterally i would splice all the wires...get out my multitester and spend countless hours hookin peeps up for free. i finally Had to stop and say no.

Now I just build computers...prolly 6 or so a month for free...gunna have to stop this stupidity...especially since i have ran into some really screwy computer parts lately...and my errors have cost me countless troubleshooting hours.

As for car audio, search the net, TONS of info, and as suggested, read everything you can find!

installing speakers/amps/subs/decks is very easy...

if you are good at electronics AT ALL, you could do it yourself, w/ a simple diagram

Everyone I knew that always said they got the hookup was referring to the fact that all of their stuff was "hot." The best was when their sh!t would get jacked and they would bitch about it.

I believe the correct shirt would read "no, I am not your tech support, a-hole" OR "sure, I'll be your personal tech support a-hole for free".

Most of the people that are the first to yell, "i've got hookups" are full of shyt. They've probably only been to a store once to buy a headunit/amp/subs/speakers. They assume that they *know* the owner well after that one purchase.

This is basically true. Instead of going through a "hookup" through my cousin, I opted to purchase online (Crutchfield, no less - tho' I did use $40 in coupons).
