The Left Rear Speaker in my 99 Mercury Cougar has started crackling and popping, even when the stereo is turned off. Its starting to get rather annoying. What i want to know is if its the speaker gone bad, or a bad wire between the stereo and the speaker. Also if it is a wire how much do you think it will cost to get it fixed? Also some recomendations on 6 in speakers incase i need to replace them!

Thanks,

could be the speaker, but I would first look at your deck. swap the two rear speakers and see if the problem moves or stats the same.

i doubt it's the speaker because if the deck is off, the speaker should not be getting a signal to make noise, so that leads me to believe that somehow the deck or an amp somewhere is busted and is still on even when it should be off

Check the wiring. You might have rubbed the wire enough to cut away some of the insulation and shown bare wire.
