So my vehicle blew out a speaker, and I was thinking rather than replace one, I'd go the whole nine yards--well, at least a couple yards and get some not-bad speakers, mp3 player et al.

The problem is as such: I don't know my butt from a hole in the ground about car audio. So if somebody could point me in the right direction, I would be much appreciative.

car is a dodge durango. Budget of no more than a couple hundred bucks, and looking to replace all speakers.

edit2: i'd like to keep it under $600. i can't imagine i'll spend more on my friggin car system than my computer.

start with what kind of car you have, budget, and quality that you are looking for

Few questions we need to know first:
What size was the speaker that blew?
What is your budget?
Are you looking for job a speaker replacement or whole 9 yards eventually?

a couple hundred bucks will probably just get you the speakers. A good head unit will run you another couple hundred. Are you going to do the install yourself?

I'm certainly capable of doing the install. Are there any recommended brands, or brands I should avoid, or places I should or shouldn't shop?

You should be able to do pretty good for $600. I haven't done any installs in awhile so I'm not exactly sure whats out there now but that doesn?t change much. Just stay away from the crapy best buy installs and similar, a good place to start is Crutchfield.com.
