Car audio subwoofer positioning?

edro

Lifer
I have a single 12" Diamond subwoofer and I like the way it sounds as it is. The problem is that I don't want crap in the trunk hitting up against it and I doubt I could put a grill on it (the subwoofer extends out of the box pretty far). Right now the sub is facing the back of the car.... Will it change the sound much by facing it towards the driver seat, or the driver side, or the passenger side?

I would just do it myself, but I have 4 bolts holding it to the trunk, so I can't really just go turn it and see myself.

Thanks,
Ed

It depends on the car and the sub really. Most people find that pointing it towards the seats yeilds better sound quality, but is not as loud. Best way is to just try it and see.

Oh yeah, and it wouldn't be hard to find a grill for it at all

Firstly, buy or make a grill for that sub!!! Once the cone is punctured, it's toast.

Secondly, subwoofer positioning has EVERYTHING to do with how it "sounds." IE: overall frequency response, frequency boost, frequency cancellation, sypathetic vibrations, etc.

There is no right or wrong way to position "subwoofer A" in "car A." Turning the sub around or even moving it a foot "this way or that way" can make a 100% negative or positive difference.

The only way is to try and see.

Low frequency sound waves are non-directional. Generally, if you have the speakers facing a wall it will help amplify the sound but I doubt the back of your seats will do it as I think there's nothing solid/air tight between the speakers and your backseat. So, like jfall said it will yield better sound but not as loud if you face it against the trunk where the sound will bounce off the trunk before getting to your ears.

If you got it bolted in there and you like the way it sounds, I would say just get a grill for it. I know those subs don't have that high of an X-MAX, I was able to find a grill for my Eclipse 8812 and it has a 1.17" x-max
