I have an old car with the original sound system that is getting quieter and quieter. I think my main problem may be a dirty volume control potentiometer, so I will try to clean it with a spray cleaner from Radio Shack - has anyone had any luck with that? Also, is there any way to measure how much power each speaker is getting? I swear the left side is a little weak.
The speakers also have the foam surround gone that connects the cones to the frame, so I guess that's why they put out no bass. When I listen to speakers in a store thay all sound the same to me, so I bought the $25 Pioneer bottom of the line. After installing one, the old one had much better highs, so I guess they are going back. Back at Best Buy, now I like the $40 Jensens because I can hear things like cymbals much better. I noticed the Pioneers were not good in my car because the guitar in U2 was almost inaudible.
My question is, most people always recommend car speakers that are more like $100-200 per pair. What do you get for all this? I now know I need to spend more than I did, but this is an old car that may die, so I want to stay with the original main unit and just try better speakers. Should I just go by my own ear? Thanks.
One more thing - can you directly compare the size of the magnets from 10 year old speakers with new ones, or have there been improvements that would make a smaller magnet do the same job? The old ones have 9.4 oz strontium magnets. Is that good?
