Car Audio: sound cutting off intermittenly w/2 amps

I've had an MTX Thunder, old model probably 250 watts pushing an MTX 12" Sub of similar power.
It's been working great for over a year.

I've decided to add a 4 channel Pioneer amp (4x30) to the speakers, and I hooked it up successfully last weekend.

All the necessary accessories have been used.
-4 ga. for battery (60 amp fuse)
-4 ga. for ground
-battery goes to fused distro (40 amp fuse) and steps down with 8 ga. to both amps
-non-fused distro for ground, also 8 ga.

Head Unit is a Pioneer DEH-P7300.

It worked fine for a day with absolutely no problems.
Then when I juiced up the volume one time, the sound now cuts off intermittently.
In other words, everything will be fine one moment, the next moment everything shuts off except for what appears to be the dome tweeters.
No mids or bass, and no subwoofer.

IMPORTANT: The sound never cuts off completely. I'll always hear at least a little bit of sound on the speakers, and it sounds to be the dome tweeters - absolutely no bass however.

Recently, it's been more off than on.
And it happens when a "bassy" section of the song is about to come in.
Also happens if I hit a big pothole, but I don't see how these 2 correlate.

The headlights and accessory lights don't seem to be cutting on and off, so I 'm not sure if it's a power issue. They're not really high powered amps to begin with.

Anyone know what it could be?
I haven't had time to troubleshoot the wiring yet.

Thanks in advance :D

Somethings loose perhaps, like a wire connection. I say this because you meneion it happens when going over potholes, and perhaps a really bassy part of the music causes the loose connection to cut the bass?

Hmm... sounds likely since I loaded the trunk to the max the day it happened, but wouldn't that cause ALL sound to cut off?

Thanks for the suggestion.
I will check the ground tomorrow :D

you have a bad ground...make sure you use seperate grounds for each amp. If that doesnt solve it, its most likely a blown speaker...when a speaker is blown it can short circuit your whole system and make everything cut out, but most likely its a ground issue

Not always. A bad ground can make flaky stuff happen.
