car audio question

a pre-amp takes the signal from the headunit's rca's say they are 2.5V and amplifies them to X volts. where X is the setting on the pre-amp

an amp... well hopefully you know what that is.

ok what about channels? i see on the circuit city website of amps that are 2-6 channel. what does that mean?

One channel for each speaker 95% of the time (except subs). So if you want to power your two front speakers use a two channel amp.

2 channel amp: can power a pair of speakers, L and R channels

4 channel: can power pair of speakers, L and R: Fr. and Back.

or bridge and cut channels in half.

etc.
