car audio question

if i wanted to put in a custom stereo into a vehicle and speakers with a powered sub, with installation and such is $800 a reasonable estimate for the materials and labor and installation?

I am looking to get an indash mp3/wma player/changer
i have no idea how much this stuff costs or what are good brands, a guy at work said alpine makes good car stereos. any thoughts on this?

alpine makes VERY good headunits. (nevermind, the seller is out of them on ebay)
amps are gunna cost you probably the most.
speakers will cost anywhere from 100-500 depending upon quality.

I agree, the Eclipse HU's are totally awesome. They receive some of the highest ratings over on on the caraudio forum. But, there are other options available. Go with whatever HU offers the features/looks that you like. Then, if you're running an external amp for your interior speakers, purchase an Audio Control 4.1 line driver. I have a Pioneer Premier HU, a 4.1, and a Visonik 4-channel digital amp running my 4 channels of Infinity Perfect speakers. I have the 4.1 set to send 8v to my Visonik and the SQ is totally awesome.

Probably Nak and Denon compare very well, if not better then, Eclipse, but with far fewer "features". But I suppose since they're pretty much tops you don't really need all those adjustments anyway?

Eclipse isn't the only option. You can get good sound with Alpine and Pioneer also....as well as Clarion....so many to choose from. Don't limit yourself to one brand. $800 is a good starting point for a system.......just save money and install the stuff yourself.

that's about right, I got my first deck and speaks for around 400 and then subs and amp in a custom box for another 400, so it's not horrible, including installation and esp if it's in-town retail.

Check prices online of parts and how much installation is locally, many times you can save tons of $$$ buying the speakers and receiver and such online then getting installed locally

Oh, and, at least at Best Buy you can haggle with the salesman even for a simple cd player/radio receiver, I got free installation with mine. Don't buy at full price, those guys have a large profit on each product.
