Car audio question. Is this worth it?

Hi. I know next-to-nothing about car audio. With that said...

I have a '99 S-10. Stock dash and door speakers. If I were to upgrade these beyond stock to some sort of badass, name-brand replacements, would it be much benefit to me? Would this achieve better/deeper/crisper/louder sound without installing a subwoofer, or an amp?

I did this, and it is a little better, but it still distorts at high volumes. Just get one amp for your 4 speakers and it will make it much cleaner and crisp. If you get 6x9s in the back like I do, you will also be able to get good bass......

I have an Infinity Perfect 6.1 system up front and Kappa 6x9s in the rear. 125w x 4 from a Visonik V4208 amp, Pioneer Premier HU, and an Audiocontrol line driver. With about 130-140ft^2 of sound dampening, this setup sounds sweeet. Especially with my 2 12" Elemental Designs 12Ks in the rear in a custom-built fiberglass box.

Head over to the www.caraudio.com forums and read up. You'll learn more than you want to know.

Virtually, no speakers will ever compare to what a subwoofer and amp can offer. Life is simply too short to live - without good or adequate bass. :)

Make sure you replace the deck if you replace the speakers. I replaced the speakers first and wow, it sounded a lot worse than the stock deck. I then threw in an Alpine deck and it's much much better! At high volumes replacing just those it's ok. I think you'll be happy if you spend some decent money and don't buy the cheapest stuff there is.

The difference between two different brands of 5.25 speakers is much much less than:
  1. car they are in
    the cloth or leather seats,
your seat position front to back
your seat position up and down
your seat position reclined or not
    the position of the speakers
    the angle of the speakers
    # of doors in your car
    interior volume of your car
the frequency of the road noise inside your car
    the gear you are in
    the speed you are travelling
the absolute dB level of the road noise
the sum of the S/N ratio of all your equipment plus the road noisie dB
    the length of your hair
the path length difference from the right front speaker to your head and the left front speaker to your head (the ideal is 0" - which is likely only if you drive a McLaren)
The tonal characteristics of the LAST song you listened to ( this will in efffect adjust the level at which you percieve certian frequencies) So, song A will sound diffent if you listen to it right after song B than it will after listening to song C

Not exactly, since all those variables you listed are constants. Whether you use bargain basements or high end speakers, those variables will be the same.... ;)

Yes, but they may infact make the bargin basment speakers sound better in your particular car than the Uber speakers.
The point is, even a bargin basement sub is better tna all other possible modifications.
