Car audio question - amps

I picked up a JVC head unit that's going back tomorrow (it's defective) but I figure something in my price range (less than $200) will have crappy onboard amp : if I could only afford a pretty low-end head unit right now, would a seperate amp improve that sound quality to high end levels (assuming it's a high end amp/speaker) or would I have to start with a high-end head unit? I know with home audio a $70 cd player with digital outs could sound pretty damn good if hooked up digitally to a high end amp - same deal here or no?

it could make it sound better. if you are going to push th stock speakers than it probably wont make that much of a difference.

if you have a decent set of speakers than id go for the extra amp.

probably. with preamp outs your headunit is a glorified walkman.

I'm using rockford fosgate 6.5's.. Was thinking about switching to Infiniti's up front..

What is the RMS handling on the RF speakers you have?

I honestly have no idea.. I picked them up from circuit city over a year ago.. Let me try to dig around a bit and get the exact info..

150$ decent brand cd player with rca preouts would suffice in running a good quality system... so yeah 🙂
