Since my cd player was stolen out of my truck this week i have been considering options on replacing my kenwood deck. Luckily they left everything else. But then i realized, i only used it for connecting my ipod into the speakers and powering my mids and highs. I dont need a cd player and i dont really want to replace it, but i NEED my music back.

I currently have an mtx 4202 amp powering my 10" sub and infinity mids and highs in the doors. On my amp, it has the option to daisy chain multiple amps, i think they have to be same model, but it would be nice if i could use it to hook in a mono channel sub amp. I would like to run my sub off one and the mids and highs off the other amp. Since they use rca inputs into the amps, this looks like it is really simple and i just need to reroute some speaker cable in my truck. The ipod has an equalizer in it and i realize that i cant control fade or balance, but it is a single cab truck. Seeing the cost of the ipod, i dont want to fry it by something i overlooked.

I never got into stereos that much and a friend picked stuff out for me and installed it. Is this a crackheaded idea and should i avoid it?

To fill in the big gaping hole in the dash, i am thinking of forming some metal or some fiberglass to make it a big pocket to hold my junk (change, sunglasses,etc...) or just leave the wires hanging out the hole to say "You bastards already stole it, now scram."

If you want to install a sub amp, just find one with RCA outputs on it. Run the RCA's to the RCA in on the sub amp and the RCA outs to the main amp.

I think the RCA voltages obtained by headphone converters are generally lower and more variable than those from the HU. You might find it difficult to tune/balance the amps - especially if you adjust the volume of your iPod. It'd be worth a shot, but I wouldn't expect it to work wonderfully. Also, you can get dash "pockets" to fill in the hole... although I think you might as well just suck it up and get either a cheap radio unit (one your iPod can transmit to via FM or with a line in plug on it).

Oh, forgot one more thing. Your amps use a 12v signal to turn them on. It's a low current thing that generally comes from the head unit whenever it's on. You'd want to wire in a switch that either allows you to manually turn on the amps or make sure they're attached to a voltage that's only on when the car's operating.
