Ok, to start off let me tell you that I know nothing about audio equipment. All I know is that I drive a 91 GMC Sierra single cab and I have a new cd player and 4 new 6x9 (I believe) speakers. The speakers are pretty good, but when I hit the loud button on the cd player the extra bass makes the speakers buzz and my dashboard (remember, this is a fairly old truck) will rattle. Ok, I think they way to solve this would be to take the bass off of my speakers. For this I would need to buy a sub and an amp, correct? Also, can you recomend any good ones. Nothing two expensive, I don't need for you to hear me a mile away. I'm just looking for some extra bass and to get it off of my speakers. If I can get this for under $200 that would be great.

not an audophile either... but maybe those absorption mats you stick around your panels could help with the rattle...

Under 200 is a bit hard to do, but still do-able.
Anyways, get the subs, get a low pass filter. Hook the filter up to the 6x9's to keep the bass from reaching them. Our amp will have a high pass filter.
For subs, I would recommend Lambda Acoutstics right now. There going out of busniess, which means you gan grab there subs at a steal. Not alot of people run them, but the people I have spoken to about them absolutely love them. Top notch SQ sub, not much for getting stupid loud though.
Lambda Acoustics

Get the LE version of their subs, you'll be set. As for amp, you cant go wrong with JBL, so i would do the 600.1 or 1200.1, depedning on which LA sub series you choose.
To be honest, you arent going to find a quality sub and amp combo for 200 unless you settle for 1 subwoofer, or go with something on sale / going out of business. You could grab a Adire Shiva (Its a 12") sub for 125. An Elemental Designs for around 130 or so. Then figure anywhere from 150 to 250 for the amp alone. Thats why we cant go with SPL based subs. The extra money for the amp would put you WAY over. Maybe a Infinity, I havent priced them in a while.

But, for your situation and budget, I think LA is the perfect fit.

I forgot to add...
Yeah, the buzz is probably the sheet metal rattling. Raammat will fix it right up, and its half the price of that Dynomat crap

Thanks for the replies. Do any car audio stores sell any of that raammat or anything similar? The buzz is probably the most annoying thing right now.

You'll need to buy the Rammat on-line to save some $$. If you go to a local audio store, they'll have Dynamat - and charge you dearly for a small sheet of the stuff.

Additionally, keep in mind that you'll have to eliminate the rattles before you install a sub-woofer. Otherwise, the sub is just going to rattle in the same areas that your current speakers do. If you have some components that are loose in your dash, installing the sound dampening material will not fully resolve your situation. You might want to turn your music up with your current system and pin-point the rattles. Then, buy some rubber washers and install them under the bolts and screws in the areas where the rattles are coming from. I have a feeling that this might be your most effective method at getting rid of the rattles -- and you'll spend no more than $5.00 at Home Depot for a nice assortment of rubber washers.

Best of luck! ;)
