If you had about $700 for a head unit, a 2 channel amp for subs, and 2 12s what would you buy ?

Like 6 1/2's and some tweeters... It's pretty ghetto driving around with nice lowed and having lyrics, snare drum, high hat, and everything else coming out distorted...

My system has low end MB Quart DSD 216s and I am in no hurry for any subs right now... The components are powered by an old Kenwood amp going 2x70W RMS to the passive x-overs... from there the highs go to the 3/4" titatium dome tweeters and the lowend goes to the 6 1/2" woofers... of courses I should have low pass filters there because 6 1/2's are meant to play below 120Hz or so, but you deal with what you have...

here is a pic of the amp and x-overs

I used to go 2x25W to the MB Quarts and put 1x70W RMS to a 10" sub and prefer my current setup way better! I do plan on buying a sub, but I think it is better to start of with good components and upgrade to a nice sub or two later... Driving with good subs and crappy speakers will sound like an ass.

Hopefully this bump will get some of the car audio gurus here to help out... or try out termpro.com
