Car audio...I got 2 subs, what do i need to hook these up?

I got 1 Kappa Perfect 10.1 Subwoofer from a friend and im gonna get a second soon. What exactly do i need to put these into my car? Im guessing i need an amp, each sub is 350rms, so do i need a 700w amp? What kinda wiring? and where can i get a good box for the subs?

A 250W amp would be sufficient depending on the type of amp. I run two Polk Audio 10's (1000W each) on an RF 250a2. You will also need an amp install kit which includes power cable, ground cable, remote wire, and rcas. You can pick up boxes at BB, CC, or any other electronics store that sells car audio, but they are overpriced.

Any high-gauge OFC cable will be sufficient as per wiring.

Your amp needs depend on whether you will be wiring them in parallel or in series.

Box? Build your own (based on internal volume given by manufacturer). Try to have as few parallel walls as possible, and dump fiberglass insulation in just before you mount the drivers. PM Viperoni for more details.

Is this something do-able at home, or should i just get it installed by the place where i by an amp? Any links on this paralell and series stuff?

You can do it yourself easily enough.

Parallel: + lead on amp to + lead on woofer 1 to + lead on woofer 2, same with - leads
Series: + lead on ampt to - lead on woofer 1, + lead on woofer 1 to - lead on woofer 2, - lead on woofer 2 to - lead on amp

Its duable at home, but it's a b!tch to get the wires for the rca's and the power wires for the amp back there.

I've ordered a lot of stuff from Sound Domain. For my woofer, I bought a box at some other site, it might have ikesound.com, but I can't remember so I can't really vouch for them. mmxpress is supposed to be a reputable place as well.

edit: I think I ordered some stuff from thezeb.com, as posted below, but I can't remember for sure... it was a while back.

For the box it depends what kinda sound you want. If you go with a smaller size box the tighter the bass is but not as powerful. The bigger the box gets the bass is more powerfull but not as accurate. For perfects you dont need that big size of box...also did you want to go with sealed, ported, or bandpass box?

sub boxes shipping is only $8.00!

if u already have an amp for your other speakers, can't you splice into those wires for signal sou don't have to mess with your deck? assuming your old amp is in the trunk

I drive a 1992 ls400...it comes standard with an 8 inch subwoofer in the back. I duno how that effects the installation or how the heck i install it. I need some good literature on this sort of stuff and some how to's.

How do i know howmany watt amp to get, whats better series or parallel?

Well, your woofers are 350rms right? So, get an amp that pushes up to 350 watts rms. You don't really need two 350 watt amps or anything. Well, for one, how much do you plan on spending? Assuming a limited budget, one option is this:

4x85 watts RMS amp, bridge the channels, so basically you'd have a 2 240w channels, one for each sub, also assuming a 4 ohm load. You would just wire each sub to each bridged channel normally. That should give you all the power you need. And the amp is only $175. You might be able to find it cheaper elsewhere.

Get a wiring kit for the amp. Personally, I would find a shop and just pay them. It costs around $75-100 total for the amp kit and install.

You could have them mount the amp under the rear deck.

Do you have a factory head unit? If you do, I think they sell an adapter that will convert speaker level inputs (the speaker wire) into an RCA plug, so that you'll be able to hook the amp up to the head unit. The speaker wire leads going to the factory woofer would go into the adapter, then plug the adapter in the amp. I suppose I'll search around and see if there really is such a thing.

edit: I didn't find any before I got tired of looking. If there is no such thing and you have a factory head unit with no RCA outs, the easiest way to install the stuff would be to just get an amp with speaker level inputs and do like I said above. Otherwise, you might invest in a nice head unit. Get one that decodes MP3s. 🙂

I was reading some forums online and they recomended the JBL BP 600.1 for 2 perfect 10.1s, this is about 175 plus shippin on ebay are these?

Im prolly gonna keep my factory head unit since its a lexus and i dont want flashy stuff in the front.

Tell me, all over ebay i see all these cheap amps for like 100 pushin "1200 watts" is that for reals, or are tehy just really bad sound quality? some of these even have a remote thing that u can control sub in the front, whats that bout?

you know those cheap $20 plastic computer speakers with "200 WATTS OF EARTH SHATTERING POWER!" its sorta like that
those 1200 watt amps can output at 1200 watts for fraction of a second, if they actualy sustained that power for any length of time they would blow

Then check first to make sure you can hook that amp up to your factory head unit. Like the above poster, if they say 1200 watts, they're talking peak power, which is not what you want to go by.

I didnt check about the head unit yet, but i readup on my car (92 ls400) and turns out the amp for the built in sub is already in the trunk nexto the cd changer. Ill have a look, hopefully i wont have to run wires from the head unit then? also cant i just run my amp power to the power that old amp gets? hmm...ill prolly drop by an audio place or ask a friend also 🙂

So I did a search for audio. Havent been keeping up with my mobile audio needs here quite like I should.... To correct....

Howard, fiberglass insulation is not a requirement. Its used in cases where you cant make the box as big as you need it to be. Stuffing essentially makes the sub think its in a bigger box then it really is. If you make the box the correct size to begin with, do NOT use stuffing. You'll end up with a box too big.

0r00r00 ( or whatever), Surely can, you'd use a line level converter (Or something along that name, cant remember cause I've never used them)

Tweakmm, JBL is not what you think. Research more. Those JBL 1200.1 are actually underrated. Thats right, you get MORE then 1200 watts, and it'll do it in sines all day if you give it the input power it needs.

Spoooon (Did I get enough o's?? I think so...), Most amps are rated at RMS power, Root Mean Square. In other words, what you get all day every day as a max. Only swap meet material is rated at peak. But on the whole, reputable amps rate at RMS.
