*update*

I think Ive got what I want figured out. I just want to know what you guys think of this setup for a Focus.

Infinity
KAPPA572.5CF
5 x 7 (6 x 8) 2-way custom fit loudspeaker pair

Infinity
KAPPA PERFECT10.1
10" Die-Cast High-Output Subwoofer

OR

Infinity
KAPPA PERFECT10.1D
10" Dual Voice Coil Subwoofer

(Don't really know the difference, anyone want to explain)

and then for Amp I'd get a

Infinity
REF7520A
260 Watt 2-channel power amplifier

Now I don't need anything spectacular, jus twant it to sound nice. Its going in a girls car, so keep that in mind. (she probably wouldn't notice the difference between something good and something slightly better then good.)

My other question is whether or not I should go with 2 sets of Kappa speakers, or if one set would do just fine?

OK, if you are looking to buy this soon, you may want to just get some specific products instead of trying to build a knowledge base in a week. I have been tinkering with audio gadgets since I was 14, damn near 15 years now and still don't know all about it.

First thing first, if you want to know the biggest rule of thumb......you get what you pay for.

Second what is your budget? Stereos are not like computers in the fact that a 750 computer is about 85% as fast as a 1500 computer. If you buy audio equipment that is half of what the name brand stuff is, it could majorly suck ass!

So what is the budget? You mentioned Infinity. I have Infinity components in my truck and love them. They are pricy though if you are not an enthusiast. I have a set of the Infinity perfects and they ran me right at 400 bucks. However a good set of co-axles will do just fine. I have owned the Alpines and really liked them for the money. They make a couple different models, the ones I had ran about a 100 bucks a set, which should be a good price point for a good speaker.

Next you mentioned amping the system. What do you want to gain by amping the system? Lots of bass, cleaner sound, louder sound...etc. I use a Rockford Fosgate amp to create a cleaner sound; my brother-in-law uses an 800 watt Rockford amp to run a single 15 inch kicker L7 solo baric sub. It will shake the neighbors, but he hasn?t amped anything else in his car (and still has factory speakers) and to me it sucks a-hole, but he loves it. Also you need to decide are you going to run multiple amps or a single multi channel amp? I like the multi deal for simplicities sake. I love the 5 channel Alpine MRV-F450. It runs about 500, but it has 50*4 and 200*1 for the mains and the sub. Plenty of clean power and it also will "thump" if called upon.

As for the deck, you don't have to use a lot of money here since you would be amping the system. All you need to look for is high voltage output (ie 4volt or higher). And then just pick the features on the deck that you like. I do recommend getting the MP3 player option because it lets you put 100+ songs on a single disk and they still sound great. Also I have had the best luck with Alpine in the deck market. I have owned Pioneer (Premier line), Kenwood, Sony, Clarion, AWIA, and a couple others, but have always liked the Alpine the best.

You mentioned the sub. Best thing to do there is go to the shop and listen. I like the sound of the JL Audios, some people like the "in your face" bass of the Kickers, others like Fosgates. It is all about taste. That?s true with the main speakers as well. You may not like the Alpines that I liked, or the 400 Infinities in my truck. Case and point, Focal is considered by many to be the best component speaker made. Several years ago I worked all summer and saved all my money to buy a set of these. At this time I think they where a little over a grand per set. With money in hand I drove to the nearest dealer that carried them. I had never actually heard them, just read about them in countless magazines, anyway, long story short, when I got there I listened to them and did not like the sound of then what so ever. Ended up buying a set of $300 Alpines. So you need to buy according to you taste.

I agree with everything (mostly) and having been in audio for over 30 years,I 've gone the whole route.... minimalist, everything and the kitchen sink, back to the middle of the road stuff. Best advice, get something that isn't an instant break in for her to worry about, and get something that will fit without modifications. She's gonna be listening to it and doesn't need to worry that it's the "cool brand de jour"

Also, the phrase is "case in point". As in I am using this case to make my point.....
And it's written "whatsoever"... all one word.
😀

Just remember you're gonna have to spend a decent amount of money to run 2 subs, underpowering subs ruins them faster, so you're best off with getting an amp with good RMS power, or two amps with good RMS power (most likely, both are going to be expensive to get 2 subs running.) Either that or the subs will have to be cheapo ones, which will also ruin faster.

Check out the forums there. I learned practically everything I know about car audio there. Lots of good guys to help out with any questions you have.

You could get a Fosgate amp, IF YOU WANNA COOK EGGS ON IT!

j/k I haven't had a chance to check out there new stuff, but their old amps used to run hot as hell.

Get a real amp like Directed or Orion 🙂

....or NOT.

What do you think happens when you turn down the volume? An amplifier will almost never hit peak power under normal listening conditions.

I can't remember the reference sites that I've seen, but I'd definately recommend going to CAF.. I have heard some pretty bad things about the SD forums; they have actually been the brunt of a few jokes at CAF.

As far as components:
If you stay away from the mainstream stuff, you'll get a MUCH better deal and probably better sound. Subwoofers from companies like RF, Audiobahn, and MTX tend to not result in more than fart-boxes. Subs from RE, DD, Adire (Shiva: 12" ~$125), and Image Dynamics (ID12 = ~$160) would probably suit you well.

Power it by a proven budget amp like the Hifonics BX series and you should be good to go.

I've always used Alpine decks in all of my rides and absolutely LOVE them. I don't think I'll ever buy anything else.

Until you try Eclipse😉

At any rate, I don't think the OP is looking for a real top-end type system. I'm guessing he's looking for something along the lines of what I put into my gf's car; Eclipse MP3 hu, Eclipse coaxs and an Infinity Basslink. Great setup for the money IMHO.

What did it cost ya?

Okay here is the deal.. this is what most ppl in the focus forums do.

Replace speakers with some 6x8's (stock is 5x7) polk's or infiniti or Pioneer. Put in an infiniti bass in a box whatever its called with its built in 200W amp. The HU either stays stock or they replace it with whatever.

Remember your install cost is going to be high for this job. I wouldnt get seperate components for speakers. They usually power the speakers with an amp and the sub has its own amp.

get a decent head unit, run the factory speakers of the radio, get a couple of 8" subs and an amp and your set. wont thump but will sound nice with a little kick

Why not just run a bass in a box setup off the factory headunit. For $200-300 she will enjoy a bit more rounded sound.

Once you start adding amps, Head Units, door speakers, wiring, car-alarm, subs, boxes, signal processor, your gonna be well over $1000. Lets not forget the install and PITA of tearing apart her car.

Infinity makes the Basslink and have heard and seen it in a few cars. For Bass in a tight space with minimal wiring it works well. Especially in a Focus Hatch you can mount it on the rear fender well in the trunk and not take up much space.

I'd suggest taking a look at Crutchfield for some specific speakers that will fit, or just taking it to a car audio shop. Installing and configuring speakers can be a time-consuming process. Plus, running wires and poking holes in your firewall can be a big PITA.

HU - $200
Speakers - $100 a pair (2 pair)
Sub - $210 (employee discount, ~$350 retail)

8" subs BLOW. You need at least a 10. I had dual 10's. Sold those and went to a single 12. It sounds worlds better.

Infinity Home Audio:thumbsup:
Infinity Car Audio:thumbsdown:

Throw out your Crutchfield magazine. Infinity car audio equimpment is SUCK. If the girl doesn't car about sound quality, why bother upgrading?

Yeah, I used to think it was great until I really started comparing it to other brands. The Eclipse speakers I chose blew away anything I heard from Infinity.
