So, how does it compare as a $150US sub?

Shockwave,

I honestly don't remember the measurement on my box (been a few years since it was setup). I'm pretty sure it's 1.25 - 1.5 cu ft with some kind of stuffing in it (again, fuzzy on the details). Are you telling me that I'm far out of spec with this setup? What exactly am I hurting with this size box?

Boxes are like computers man, we all have our favorites ;)
Is YOUR box out of spec? No, generally boxes dont have "spces" in regards to subwoofers. Now, what boxes DO have is affects on subwoofers! So no, your box is not out of spec. In fact, if YOU like the sound of it, your box is fine! An easy test is to remove the polyfill (That is the fuzzy stuff inside the box) Polyfill makes the speaker think it is in a bigger box then it really is, so in fact your speaker may THINK its in a larger box! Remove it, see how it sounds. You might not even hear a difference! SQ in speakers is VERY subjective, essentially what people who are really into this do is model a box for a particular speaker, see what it looks like, build it, listen to it, and then back to the drawing board. So, you may have 2 or 3 different boxes for the same speaker, just to see what happens. I would think with the polyfill it probably sounds pretty good. And for the price, I think your doin fairly well :)

You need to realize it wont be very loud at all in your explorer. I woudl bet your explorer has a good 2x+ the interior area of a little 2 door car. That means if you wanted to reach the same SPL that a perfect 12" gets in a, say cavalier, you would need 2 of those 12"'s and 2 of those same amps that would be in a cavalier.

I have learned this lesson in the van I have right now. My 2 12's powered off of an alpine v12 amp barely suffice, yet it is a much more powerful setup, and in smaller cars, it would hurt your ears with all the SPL.

It'll be plenty loud. You have to realize what my goal is. I want very nice lows with a balanced sound (ie: no booming bass with inaudible mids and highs)

I have a friend with a Kappa 12.1 in a Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited.

It is getting 400W, and he got a 4ch amplifier for the factory Infinity speakers (to replace the factory amp).

The bass is plenty. Keep in mind that SUV's are not that large inside... and the subwoofer is in the same cabin space as the passengers (where mine is in the trunk)
