Is there any reason I couldn't mount my mid range speakers in the same box with my subs as long as the box volume stays accptable? Thankx in advance for your assistance.

The back sound wave from the sub would blow the cones completely out of the basket on your mids. That's reason #1 to not mount them in the same box.

Reason #2. Midrange frequencies are directional. It will sound like all the music is coming from in back of you. But reason #1 is the real, compelling reason.

the pounding from the subs would probably blow out those speakers.. and it would make the subs sound like crap too.. you can do it if you can build another box inside the sub box so your midranges are totally sealed from the subs... but it sounds like more trouble than it's worth

well yah as long as the box is not in the trunk or something. A lot of sub boxes have horn tweeter mounted on them.

where's your box going to be? Behind you most likely right? As the frequency increases the sound becomes more directional, so it would sound odd for your stereo to be coming from behind you.

Reason #1 IS a very compelling reason not to. I haven't built the sub boxes yet, so I guess I'll "subdivide" an upper corner to mount the mids, any ideas how much airspace a 6-1/2" mid might require? I have the specs for the sub so I can "add" enough room for the mids. Thankx to all for your input.

Capn,

The vehicle in question is a Jeep CJ, the only place for the speakers is in the back. I'm fabbing a solid cover for the cargo section and will build the sub box in the front of it, right behind the seats. I was figuring to mount the subs (2x8") down low, the mids above them and the tweets next to the mids. In the dash will be 5-1/2 mids and tweets. In between the two sub boxes, I should have enough room to mount the two amps, crossovers, and changer. Won't take up too much of the very little cargo space, all nice and covered and secured for when the tops off.
