So I bought a shond3 adapter that plugs into a proprietary auxiliary jack at the bottom of the factory stereo. It has RCA inputs and works with any device. When I plug my Zen into it, the sound comes out fine, no background noise or anything.
Now, I wanted to be able to charge my zen in the car without having wires sticking out all over the place. Right beneath the stereo is a cubby with a lid so I have the mp3 player in there. To get power to it, I cut the wires to the cubby light (12 vdc, comes on with the car head lights) and connected them to a 12v>5v converter (I used the internals of a cigarette-to-usb adapter that I had laying around) and then that 5 volts goes to the zen.
The unit charges fine with the head lights on. However, with the power plugged in, there is a faint buzzing coming through the speakers. It's a classic ground loop problem I believe. What I want to know is how to fix it.
Do I need an isolator on one or both of the power connections? (12v-to-converter, converter-to-mp3 player) Do I need the isolator on the audio connection between the mp3 player and shond3/shond3 and stereo?
Can I connect the stereo ground to the power ground if I measure 0 volts across the two points to eliminate this?
