Car audio: faking out amp remote power

What is needed to convince an amp that it should be on? In other words, what condition on the RMT line tells the amp to turn on? It isn't ground, is it the full 13+VDC from the power line? Is it something lower, like a 5v signal? What is it?

addition: I have a switch running between my +12v line and the REM terminal....that way I can turn on my amp independantly of the PS.
