I third (?) the JVC reccomendation.

I have the sh-99 and it is wonderful. The newer model is just the same as the old one, only an updated look.

I say stick with JVC

Another vote for JVC. I'm a KD-SH99 user here for the past year and it's been a great player. However, that Alpine also looks mighty tempting for $349.

The JVC KD-SX980 looks very good. The reviews are positive and it comes in under the magic $200 price.

But how is it on skipping?

It doesnt skip at all. The quality of the audio is great no matter how rough the road is.

JVC SH-99
24bit Burr Brown DAC's.
JVC did drop the price of this new head unit down to $349 - the KD-SH99 had an MSRP price of $399.
The newer model is just the same as the old one, only an updated look.

Here's some information that I found on another forum regarding the comparison of the KD-SH99 vs. the KD-SH707:

"These units offer 24-bit DAC, a high-bit format for higher resolution and lower distortion from CDs. The Burr-Brown PCM1716E 24-bit DAC quantifies the 16-bit digital signal to convert it to the 24-bit format. This process compensates for the conversion error that is created during recording, delivering a sound that?s closer to the original with less error."

"It is a Burr-Brown for both the SH-707 and the SH-909."

My KD-SH99 which I've owned for a year now has never skipped and I've driven my car on many different road surfaces. Also, I've burned MP3s onto many different makes of CDs - from the generic CompUSA 12x varieties to the Taiyo Yuden discs. Never a problem with any of the different makes of media.

Now, since I'm replying to this thread, I have to put a plug in for my gear. I'm selling my complete system: My Gear

no complaints so far, other than my crummy stock speakers. but it does make them sound a LOT better.

I own a JVC SH99 also and it skips because my CDs are dirty and/or scratched. That's the only time it skips. This occurs because I have so many CDR(W)s that i just throw them all on top of each other and they get scratched... but they still work :)

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned the Sony MP30! I love mine and it's been great since June. I paid $236 at Best Buy. Definitly worth checking out along with the JVC.

as long as it wasnt an Aiwa CDC-Mp3... I had it for 8 months or so now and its gone for repair liek 4 times.. but it finally got fixed.. and now i dont have a car to use it on (damn car died).. so I am taking it out. My next car will have it.. (if its a used car) otherwise I will keep just for later use.

what about interfaces? I drive a stickshift in rush hour traffic regularly so I need something that is easy to navigate. I heard the Alpine had the best interface...anyone got comments on this?
